Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and seeking some insights into my chances of being selected for SNA (Student Naval Aviator). Here's a brief overview of my qualifications:

- ASTB Score: 5/5/5
- GPA: 3.9
- Experience: 7 years of active duty, specializing in aviation as an Aircrewman and Machinist Mate.

I'm currently on active duty and considering retaking the ASTB if I'm not selected for the April board. I've been following the discussions on this forum regarding the board's apparent preference for NFOs and the perceived importance of PFAR scores over LORs.

However, there's some conflicting information circulating among officers at my squadron. Some suggest that having a Letter of Recommendation from a Flag Officer virtually guarantees selection. But what about a LOR from a State Senior? Would it significantly impact my chances, given my ASTB scores?

I'd greatly appreciate any insights or advice from those with experience or knowledge in this area. Thank you in advance for your assistance!
I would have said to retest prior to submitting, unless ISPP minimum scores just about guarantee a decline as the ASTB is THE most important thing when going for SNA or SNFO.

Unless you were going to go for ISPP which you stated you can't, LOR's from anyone don't matter as the board rarely reads anything since the ASTB is the predictor as to how a person will do in the pipeline.

If you submitted for both SNA and SNFO odds are a person will get picked for SNFO over SNA that is why you only submit for what you really want.

Fair enough, I appreciate the honest feedback! This is my first time submitting my application, so I’m preparing that I won’t get selected this time up and will retest once the results come out mid/late April.

You’re more than welcome to get a third but it probably won’t get looked at. Not that it doesn’t matter, but PFAR is king for pilots (as previously mentioned)
How much sway do you think an LOR from someone in a high position in a government agency or a cabinet position or a senator/congressman would have? Asking for a friend.

If I had to guess, probably none. An LOR won’t improve PFAR/FOFAR, no matter how high up that person is

Good luck to all on this board, finally got everything done with my packet and is being submitted today.

I wound up talking to a retired officer over the weekend about using a state representative as a LOR but was advised against it due to the fact that unless you personally knew the representative or anyone in such position then the quality of the LOR wouldn’t be all that since they couldn’t speak in depth about your character and such since they wouldn’t really know you. Just something to think about even though this thread established LORs for aviation board aren’t usually looked at / play a huge role in selection.

While it doesn't apply for aviation that advice is valuable for designators like Supply or IWC.

Hey everyone,

I'm submitting for this board for SNA, package is with NRC right now. Submitting under ISPP caveat. Who is managing the spreadsheet with the scores or am I able to edit that myself? Thanks and best of luck to you all.

Took the ASTB today got a 40 5/6/8, I have a bachelors with a 3.0 and a MBA with a 3.0, a LOR from a CW5 and other solid LOR’ s what are my chances? I’m trying to go NFO but I’ll do both.

That 8 FOFAR gives you solid odds for SNFO. If you submit for both, you're much more likely to get picked up for SNFO than SNA.
