i know next to nothing about the v-22.
at my 40 year tbs reunion in 2008, 91 of us (out of 211 original lt's) toured mcas quantico and got a look at a v-22.

i don't remember if the young pilot we talked to was qualed in the ospry or not.
i'm sure he made a lot of positive comments.
he also made several negative ones:

A. no foward firing ordinance.

B. too fast for escort gunships to keep up with so might have to hit a hot lz unescorted.

C. the jet exhaust when vectored down for landing can cause brush fires.

at my age (64), i've learned not to hang my hardhat on a single peg.

if you get the time, maybe you could respond the that fella's comments.

Not an Osprey guy (I like women). But I can answer these questions...

A. Nope. Neither is there forward firing ordnance on any other RW assault support platform in the USMC. Wouldn't want it either. Our job (as assault support guys) is to get dudes into and out of the zone. The most dangerous part of that is short final to landing. I don't want my copilot/HAC to be looking for targets rather than focusing on not F'in up the landing. We screw up the landing, we fail our mission. Period.

B. Not going to get into current TTPs here, but hitting the generalities - There's three types of escort. Attached, detached, and combined. Yes, it may outrun some and not be able to keep up with others - but through good pre-mission planning you can ensure that there is protection for the package...

C. Not going to defend this one at all. It's melted flight decks of ships, set fire to LZs in Haiti, etc...
 
I've got the business card of a guy who's doing some serious recruiting for this... $239,000/year. Since the contract is just now starting it's ALOT of time in the stan. Something like 9-10 months in country and 2-3 months at home. The hours are "flexible" for guys with time in the Phrog.
 
240Gs to fly the battle phrog in the same shithole you guys are deploying to? All that talk of "you'll never make airline money as a helo bubba." pssh. stop your whining, babies.
