polish Flight Boots?

Ok, just a general question for anyone who may have the word on this. Are you allowed to polish your issue steel toe flight boots?

Per uniform regulations, yes.

Per API regulations, yes.

Per my squadron, yes.

If you ever have Mr. Kay at NAS Meridian, you damn well better!

I usually polish em up nice and pretty for when I have to, and don't touch them again until well... I have to. The polish also protects them from water damage and it will protect them from light knicks and scratches. I see people maintaining a perfect polish on their boots sometimes. I swear, they aren't preflighting their aircraft.

Probably should be posted under the "Urban Legends" thread, but that whole thing about polish being a fire hazard is nothing but BS.

Yeah, I guarantee that there are more significant mounds of hydrocarbon-based grease products around the cockpit of your average jet than the tiny layer on your boots.

Next question ... does anyone in the fleet maintain a shine on their boots? I'm not talking about coloring them with a black sharpie marker, but an actual effort with some polish?

If your boots catch fire, you have a hell of a lot more to worry about than whether or not they have a little wax on them.

In the fleet? Mostly yes. In the aviation community?? I was stashed with a squadron for 6 months and those guys didn't. I remember the XO started hitting them up about shining their boots.

Yes, not necessarily an OCS style mirror shine, but every RR I've been in has a shine kit for folks to use. Ours even bought one of those gay, motorized rotary buffer things which was essentially worthless - it was summarily smashed and discarded.

It's not a big task. It takes less than 5 minutes throw some polish on your boots and give them a quick buff.

Should've gotten an Ordie to rig it to a bomb rack...

Those things are great if you have a good shine on your boots, but if you just have a couple of layers to "blacken" them then they're pretty worthless.

When I saw the subject heading for this thread I seriously thought it was about Polish, as in the country, boots. I'm glad it's not.

I am an idiot.
