Prey for DI?

Fire17

New Member
Currently I am earning my BS degree and am looking into attending OCS and earning my commission as a US Naval Officer. That being said I ahve some questions about OCS

I am worried that I will be great "prey" for the DI and was wondering how to conduct myself to blend in more, if thats possible. for starters I get red in the face when im nervous/put on the spot (family curse I guess lol) im worried that the DI will be instructing me, ill start to turn red... and Bam! beatings, its not that I cant take the beatings, but the thought of possibly being held back in class a few classes because of something as little as a blush is killing me.

Also, its hard for me to keep my military bearing. I grew up in a house where my parents would get disappointed in me rather then yell, when they did yell I knew that I was in deep s**t. How can I improve my bearing? I would hate to be in the middle of an inspection, get nervous... crack a smile and get my entire platoon (not sure what class is called) beatings for the rest of the day, I dont want to be *that* guy. Are there any tips for improving the strait emotionless face?

Becoming a Naval Officer has been a dream of mine ever since I put my foot on a boat (grew up in Annapolis) and I will do whatever it takes to achieve my dream. I have read that if the DI wants you to pass, you'll pass and if he wants you to fail... you'll fail so im asking for advice to keep my bearing and my head down to make it through the 12 weeks.

Just be loud, move fast and worry more about passing OCS than the DI's games. Before you know it, you are out of Newport.

You're just like every other A-hole that goes through OCS. I guarantee they've seen every type through there. Everyone breaks, everyone cracks up when they're being yelled at, everyone will blush. You're over-thinking this, you'll do just fine. ;)

Thanks, I tend to over-think things,

Again with the over-thinking.... would things like blushing and cracking up get me held back? (not sure if thats the right term) I just have this feeling that ill be like this guy

Of course not. The DIs are going to break you down, then build you back up. They huff and puff and scream, but they want you to succeed and you'll be a better officer for having gone through the process. Focus on things you can control, like being in good shape before you show up and learning whatever the current gouge is. Otherwise, you're just one more face in a sea of thousands of others who have made it through without a hitch. It's a rite of passage.

There is an Airwarriors member that goes by the name "First Sergeant". He lives in Tennessee. If you are able to meet with him and he is willing to take you under his wing he will fix your issue, permanently. If nothing else you may desire to choose another career path. PM him and share your inner concerns. He likes meeting talented young people and he's a good listener. You are not unusual.

If you are unable to make contact with "First Sergeant" seek out any DI prior to classing up and they can also provide support. Concerns like yours are common and are discussed confidentially with DI's prior to the Official Day #1.

forgive my ignorance, but what is a "gouge"?

I understand that it is a right of passage and I cant wait until the day that I can look back and say "yea I did that" but I dont want to keep being rolled back.

As I get closer to my graduation ill defiantly take your advice on contacting a DI, Im guessing not a current DI at RI,
It is great to know that I am not the only one with this problem, I was worried that I would get there, and everyone would be stone faced except for me,

Gouge is info, the cheat sheet, tips and tricks, etc. Basically any information not directly from the reference.

In this case, however, it is the big 4 that you will need to memorize at OCS. Search around and you will definitely find them, also they are on the OCS website I think.

Secondly, getting rolled happens. You need to not over think things, you haven't even applied and you are worried about rolling. If you do get in and you do roll, for any reason (sometimes it happens randomly, or usually for being out of shape) DON'T think about it. Just take whatever lessons you can and move forward. Believe me, I spent an extra couple weeks in Newport, if you think about it three weeks seems awful but if you just keep working you barely notice it. There are much scarier things than 3 extra weeks of chow hall procedures.

Apply. Get accepted. Get in shape. Big 4.

I can't tell if you're being serious or if you're trying to offer him up as DI fodder. Fire17, getting yelled at or rolled isn't a big deal. One of the many lessons that they are trying to teach you is that the yelling and the screaming can only affect you as much as you let them. Nobody died from getting yelled at and made to do push-ups, so shrug it off and focus on what's important: Getting that commission.

Keep in mind Pvt. Pyle is strictly a Hollywood creation, The yelling and screaming is all part of the package keep in mind that you are going to have a whole lot of miserable roomates going through it along with you.

I am frakin' INTRIGUED at what folks worry about these days. The only thing I even thought about before I got there was "where's Pensacola?!?"

Seriously, though...if you're a blusher, you and your entire class are toast. They'll probably send ICE out to check on all of your known family and friends as well...if any of THEM blush? Welcome to GITMO, folks. Turns out we let far too many "blushing types" into the US before the current standards were put into effect....none too soon, I might add... :)

That's some great leadership right there. Too bad he doesn't yet rate a "night in the box."
