I thought the dark lower and vertical stab was pre 80's livery. In 1978 I flew on a P-3 on a recruiting tour that was grey and white.

I was going by the BUNO. I initially was going to write "~1980," but changed it. For my first two deployments, one of our Det birds was 162118, which was made in 1986. The other was 164854 from 1992. Using those two numbers has resulted in a surprisingly accurate amount of guessing on other aircraft throughout the years.

VP has a small P-8/P-3 det in Dallas. Known as “Det Dallas” for secret squirrel stuff. This must be their last P-3.
I figured as much but the designation terminology cracked me up while waiting in line for coffee!

Yeah the nomenclature for the unit makes no sense to me. At least from an outside perspective. But let’s be honest, we in VP always find a way to make stuff weird and unnecessarily difficult. ?

Wash Khakis! ?
The poly cotton uniform shop wash kahki trousers never fit - the rise was just too short for my high waisted 6'4" frame. I orderd 100% cotton kahki pants from LL Bean and had a tailor modify to look like regulation pants - but were 100% cotton. When they came out of ships laundry, the starch made thepants feel and look like cardboard - but stains were easy to remove with the scalding water and soap the laundry used at the time.

I have a solo stove out back, and keep burning through various high tech fabrics as I get hit with burning embers. Desert cammies and wash khakis, reporting for duty!

Next up, flight suit.
