Re-NAS'ing Cecil Field

Anyone heard the latest on the possibility of moving NASO's Bugs and Rhinos to Cecil? Apparently Jeb "the Smart Brother" Bush has said if the Nav wants it, it's theirs, and he'll bulldoze whatever to make it happen. So just in case you didn't get enough of the Florida v. Virginia cat fight over the Kennedy, get ready for Round 2.
Personally, I'm all for Cecil. And send the Hawkeyes to NAS Jax while you're at it.
This site is a couple of years old, but it looks like the place is in fantastic shape. Needs some work, but nothing a trip to Home Depot couldn't take care of.

We were talking about that in the BRAC thread. I'm for JAX. I could easily live in Oceana then Jax for my Navy career, that's fine with me :)

Man, moving to Jax is about the only way I'd consider staying in. Norfolk is driving me batsh*t. Too crowded, too expensive, too many blackshoes, too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, too much crime and not enough decent Mexican food. Send the pointy-noses to Jax! And take your APS-145-bearing brothers with you!

Oh hell yeah...after experiencing Norfolk and Jax first-hand, I'd jump on Jax faster than a fat kid on a Twinkie. Norfolk/Va Beach is great, but for all the headaches it's just not worth it.

For all the talk of how great Jax is and how much VaBeach sucks, P-cola must be real bad. I came here from Norfolk and long for the days of being back there. Jax must be the shiznit.

For what it's worth, though, I don't think the summers in Norfolk are too hot, nor the winters too cold. Traffic sucks, true. Crime? Yeah, I guess if you end up in Gang Run, er Green Run at night you're taking your life in your own hands.

Without the Hawkeye squadrons, though, what are all the shoes supposed to dream about while they stand QD watch? I must have spent hours with my head craned to the sky before I lat xfered, staring at E-2s on final into NAS Norfolk.

Nah - don't read too much into it. Jax is really similar, but it's nice from the point that they love the military there, traffic is far better, the cost of living is much better, no snow, and lots of airspace.

Well, VB/Norfolk doesn't have temp extremes, but the way I see it, if you're going to have a sauna-like summer, you should at least get a mild winter in exchange instead of the seven months of gray, cold drizzle that passes for winter around here.
Anyway, they're going to have to do something about Oceana. Short of tearing down about a billion dollars' worth of homes and businesses, it's too late to limit encroachment. At the very least, they're going to have to shift some of the Hornets elsewhere, down to Cherry Pit or Cecil or Valdosta or wherever. I understand the Texas congresspersons are actually pushing Kingsville as a new Master Jet Base, though I think even they realize it's hopeless.
The hell of it is, to some extent, the Navy really created its own problem. The whiny punks who didn't realize jets are noisy when they moved in next to a jet base bear some of the responsibility, as do the local city council people and their "build, baby, build! the hell with crash-risk zones, we need the property taxes!" zoning program. But you have to wonder, did it never cross anyone's mind that putting over 200 noisy-as-hell jets in one place would make problems with the civvies?

"P-cola must be real bad"

Yeah, the city center moved away from where the tall buildings were and into the Payday Loan District. Don't even get me started on Pensacola Beach...at least it doesn't look like Perdido Key, where dozens of cruise ships seem to have mysteriously run aground and upended themselves around the 'Bama.

Headline from the Pensacola News Journal, I sh*t you not...the result of months of careful research by the city planners:

"Beach's Stability Lies in Sand"

Beautiful.

Sorry but if you want to see crappy places to be based in Florida, go take a look at McDill and Patrick AFB's. McDill at least has the whole "there is lots to do in Tampa" going for it, but your still in Tampa when your not going out and that will drive you nuts. Patrick is just a Tourist Hell. And Cocoa Beach sucks, sorry but I lived there for about 8 years of my life and its just waiting on the sandbar for a hurricane to come in and wash away the white trash.

Ok, I'll go with Patrick being bad...giant roaches in the VQ...but at least Cocoa has Roberto's going for it. Not many better Cuban restaurants outside of, well, Cuba.

Never been to Key West?

I grew up in Pensacola, so I'd like to get back there someday. Still, I could see why people either really love it or really hate it.
I can't say I've ever heard anyone say they like Norfolk, though. Maybe they like the extended area - Virginia and the OBX, etc - but not Norfolk itself. Seems like everyone can't wait to get out of here. Now Pt Mugu out west, THAT'S a nice crib. Too bad you have to live in the shadow of La-La Land

Nope, too many pirates of the rainbow persuasion.

(Realized my original post wasn't very a$s clown friendly, so here's the edit.)

Nah... just pipe "repel boarders" when they come after the booty and they leave you alone. Brice and Bruce aren't the problem in Cayo Hueso, it's the Dikes on Bikes who roll into town every so often. "Gay or straight, ugly's ugly." Damn womyn totally ruined Teazer's for me last time I was there.
Other than that, KW is da schiznizzle. Fa rizzle. Yo.
