What if The Bomb can't be traced because it was given to terrorist bastards? Go watch this season of 24.

Seriously, you are going to base a statement like that off a TV show?!! Please don't tell me you are that dumb.........

Even if it terrorists set off a bomb, who is to say that we could not trace where it came from? Do you know what elements we look for when a nuke goes off? What we would use to collect them? Do you know anything about nuclear collection? If you did, you would not be making the statement above........:(

Yeah, didn't you read Sum of All Fears?;) Obviously we'd find out where the bomb came from...as long as Jack Ryan was on the scene!!:icon_tong

It's a shame they watered down the movie because they didn't want to piss off the muslims. Glad 24 isn't afraid to paint every ethnicity as having terrorists and stand by it.

That would be a HUGE risk for a state to take. Nuclear bombs are developed and guarded at the state level. Handoff to a terrorist organization of such a device would be extremely hard to do without leaving some sort of trail. Our intelligence would sniff something out and someone would pay a very heavy price soon thereafter. It's just too big of a risk for a state to take. hence MAD.

edit..flash beat me to it

Point and laugh......seriously, letting morons put their own feet in their mouths is usually the best policy......

3. A resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, even steady progress in that area will pay many dividends. The ISG contains many recommendations in that vein on the diplomatic front - recommendations which are not now the policy of the present administration.

I''m not sure if it is possible to reconcile the differences between the Israeli and Arab and Muslim world. It seems the culture of hate is too mainstream and accepted by all sides for their to be any reversal in the future. One thing that has remained constant throughout history, is that Jews get the shitty end of the deal.

My biggest fear is that the conflict we have now is only a leading indicator of a larger looming conflict. these "laughable prejudices" cannot be overlooked. Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto held far less sway than the Koran and were the cause of great atrocities.

However I am worried because I have a personal stake in all these matters. Lost too many high school buddies over the past 5 years, and I want some assurance that if I go the same route it was for something tangible and not just the most politically expedient route of peace...

In my view, it's not an all or nothing proposition, and certainly deserving of some effort on our part. Things can certainly get better in that respect, even if a complete resolution is unlikely. Justified or otherwise, there's little doubt that the Arab-Israeli conflict serves as a prime motivation for why many Muslims hold the US in such low regard, so working on those issues has a direct benefit to the US.

It's looking more and more like an all-or-nothing proposition to me...Simplified version: we tried to give them a Roadmap, carving a Palestinian state out of Israel, and we've seen how well that's worked out...The greater Arab street may want US aid, but they can't accept us allied with Israel. It's the pseudo-adult version of the kid in elementary who just FREAKS OUT over you talking to that kid they hate...get over it people (never gonna happen).

Brett, not sure if you were advocating further assistance to the Arabs at the expense of Israel, or more equality...

Re: the ISG Report--So, definitely at the expense of Israel then...Actually believing Syria and Iran should take a more active, positive role in Iraq's development is too pie-in-the-sky for me...Of course they should; are they capable of such legitimate, positive action? Unlikely.

I wouldn't describe James Baker as a "pie in the sky" kind of man, so if his esteemed opinion suggests that that approach has the potential to bear fruit, I find it hard to dismiss it out of hand as you've just done. He gave some very interesting and enlightened testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee the other day where he discusses this very issue. It's available on C-SPAN's site and all of you would do well to review it.

Simply put, Israel has got to give a little to get some peace. This is not as black and white a fight as many portray it, both sides play pretty dirty. Granted, while the Palestinians are a train wreck and have and continue to commit horrible acts of terror, leveling a couple houses and seizing land are not really working out sa far for the Israelis. They have even ignored our requests to stop building settlements, basically giving us the finger in public.

As for Baker: after the Gulf War the hostages in Lebanon were released, the Oslo Accords were signed and for the first time the Palestinians and Israelis seemed to tolerate each other. All of it was started under G H W Bush's and Baker's stewardship, not too shabby.
