Scuttlebutt I keep hearing is they are making people live on base during API and Primary at Whiting. This is really going to screw me over if this is true. I came down here a month ago on house hunting, I have my lease, etc all set up. If they make me live on base I'm losing a lot of money. I did this because that's what EVERYONE did before me, included my friends that came down a couple months ahead of me. Anyone know the validity of this? Will they cut me slack since I'm already moved in? I'm checking in on Thursday.

I have a friend who is an NFO and he told me that no one lives on base during API because the facilities blow. it's got to be crap, furthermore there are plenty of posts on the site asking about how to get broadband in pcola...I'd say your good to go. Just to clarify about the facilities blowing I'm not saying thats why they let you live off base just the reason why they choose live off base..the point being you certainly have a choice.

Oh I know the choice exists, but I've heard lately they're forcing new arrivals to live in the BOQ because it is under-occupied.

ouch, I wouldn't be surprised then if they've made the change. From the way it sounds no one wanted to be on base because of the crappy condition of the BOQ...there should be someone at pcola in this forum that could clarify this for you guys

The on-base housing rumor is probably the same one I heard, but about NAS WF. As far as I know, nobody is being forced to live in the Q at either NAS Pensacola or NASWF (I'm at Whiting now). Even if you were, the BOQ at Pensacola is actually really nice.

If you signed your lease before the 21st of July, you can still live of base. This rule is only for folks going to WF. You have a choice while you're in API, but once you check-in at whiting, you must live at the Q. If you're married you have no problem, but if you're single, I would think twice before signing a lease. One more thing, this rule applies for new check-ins and not for people already at WF. And this is a no ****ter!

Don't sweat the small stuff!

Thanks for the clarification. Looks like I'm good since I'm not goint to WF but I will try and get the word out to those that are. Hopefully everyone who misses this info gets a military clause in their lease so they can get out of it, or have an understanding landloard.

Ok, my lease is actually dated for 21 July, so looks like I should be good. My orders don't say Whiting or Corpus, so I still have to select that. If I were to select Whiting, would I be able to stay at my current place?

Ok, here is the deal. If your lease is signed by 22 July, you do not have to live in the BOQ when you report to Whiting Field for Primary. You do NOT have to live in the BOQ for API or Primary anywhere other than Whiting.

If anyone wants to go shooting sometime here in P-cola, let me know ;-)

The FWC public range in Pace. 100 yard rifle range, 25 yard pistol range, skeet range. It's $5 to shoot for the day. Good deal. It's up on Quintette Road, 6850 I think is the number.

The only place I've heard with a mandatory BOQ set-up is the first couple weeks of Kingsville Jet advanced...and I've been told there'es a BS reason behind that.

The reason is money. If the BOQ doesn't keep a minimum occupancy rate the base doesn't get money for maintenance and other related expenses. It is the same thing at Whiting and probably every other base in the Navy. Whiting's Q is actually combined officer and enlisted housing so it is probably fairly easy to keep the occupancy rate at the required 94 or 96% (or whatever it is... I can't remember!). Also it is one of the nicer Qs that I have stayed in (with the exception of the permanent party Q at NAS Pensacola) which helps keep people in there. Anyway, if the occupancy rate drops below the required rate they make people live in the Q to bring the rate back up so they can continue to get funds. That is why at Kingsville you only have to stay there for the first 6 weeks or so until they get some fresh meat to take your place. I believe that once the occupancy rate goes above the requirement you can move out as long as doing so doesn't bring the rate below the requirement. Your command may also have rules about living in the BOQ that aren't really related to the minimum occupancy rates. For example if you get too many pink sheets they might make you live in the Q.
