I guess the pilot’s triple redundant backup would be the flashing AOA indicator in the cockpit then. :icon_tong

I'm sure the "real" reason is that the stripes predate flashing AOA lights, but we keep painting them stripey because we've always painted them that way...tradition!

It's still "CAG" even though we haven't had Air Groups for a long time, it's still the RAG even though it's the FRS, blah blah etc.

After having an AFCS in AUTO insist that level flight was conducted at .75g, I wouldn't trust that thing as far as I can throw it.

Take a hit on the Mode 1 crack pipe on a dark moonless night after a 7.5 over bad guy land... you'll be a believer.

SS,
What Nittany and I are saying is that the AFCS in the Prowler is OLD and UNRELIABLE. The Prowler AFCS is lucky to be working in the Basic Mode let alone some type of coupled approach.

Enjoy your crack pipe Mode 1, but in all honesty can you still say you are a Pilot if you are letting the plane land itself? Might as well put NFOs in the cockpit and then let the computer fly. :D :D

And the quadruple redundant backup would be not gaffing off your landing checklist . . . :icon_tong

.... why are some tailhooks striped in black/white? Is it saftey/visibility related? .... Helps Paddles make sure your hook's down ... I always thought that's what the flashing approach lights were for. :icon_wink ... Lights can burn out, but black & white stripes are forever?.... And the quadruple redundant backup would be not gaffing off your landing checklist . . . :icon_tong

You boys are all missin' that final line "in the sand" at the BOAT; that "final-final" cross-check of your hook up/down/flashing or not flashing lights /gear up-down type of question(s) ... day or night. :)

*** psssst*** ..... it's the LSO. :D

nah, the final check is the wires.
But if their hook/gear aren't down -- they'll never get to the wires ... and IF they aren't all down by the IC-AR position ... all they'll see is big flashing red lights ... :)

You ain't gonna "win" this one ... :D

They are all correct. :thumbup_1 If a pilot still forgets the hook after all the mentioned warnings, his head is up and locked or he has greater problems!
