running distances and pace at OCS

OCS is all about gaming the game. Get used to the phrase, "Pays to be a winner, sucks to be a loser". The standards are so high that no one can accomplish them alone. Your classmates are your only allies. In order to succeed you all need to be on the same page and win at ALL COST. Be prepared to sell your soul to the devil. You will see what I'm talking about when you get there and it will prepare you for the day to day B.S. you're going to have to deal with in the fleet.
If anyone listens to this guy, they deserve a swift kick to the chode.

<- graduated OCS Nov. 9th.

Nah, it means that there's more to OCS than "a game," and it does pay to be a winner - it also pays to not come into the place w/ a chip on your shoulder, thinking you've got it all figured out, and if you play your cards right, you'll manipulate the 'system' and get out scott-free.

Been there, done that - lesson learned. :icon_wink

What about injuries though??? I've had several recent OCS grads as well as a Lt. Commander tell me to be careful on the obstacal course and take it easy so I don't get hurt, possibly ruining my chance of being an SNA. This isn't a method of gaming the system, just a smart reduction of the pace in order to be positive of graduating OCS without experiencing career ending injuries. This is different than the running issue, but still along the same line... dropping the pace until the end when you go full bore. Any thoughts or opinions???

I think that's different than gaming the system...that's just knowing the fine line between hardcore and stupid.

Since everyone is discussing their attitudes prior to OCS . . .

Recently, I took my first flying lessons. My instructor was a retired Marine Corps Pilot who flew in Vietnam. The following are his words of advice regarding my attitude for OCS. "It will seem very serious, but remember thousands have completed it before you. Keep a slight sense of humor about everything, but DO NOT let this be known to anyone else--laugh on the inside."

Say what you will, I found this to be wonderful advice, and I know it will help me out down the road. I in no way suggest that OCS should not be taken seriously nor am I saying it should be laughed at.

BTW, I didn't believe an obstacle course was used in OCS any longer . . .

I understand what you're talking about. If you work OCS like you should then you'll understand this at the end too. There is no way to complete OCS on your own. It's not possible. You have to work as a team every way you can and you MUST win at everything the DIs make you do. My class didn't hate OCS too much but we had a great DI and we were the winners a lot of times. We took the weakest under our arm and made sure they passed. There was a time or two that that was me and there were times where I was helping out the weakest. By the end, every DI and class leader loved our class because we were squared away like no other.

Yeah that makes sense. Did they really shut down the obstacle course though??? I was just visiting with a friend (~6 months out of OCS) and he had mentioned the course was closed when he was there because some retard had got a splinter and complained the course wasn't safe... omg. But, I assumed it was a temp issue. Anyone know for sure?

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, mate.

This threw me as well. The concept of pulling together is exactly the message the staff is trying to impart, but "selling your soul" to do it....that needs clarification especially in overall context of other posts/comments about gaming the system.

I think I've seen someone on these message boards say Hurricane Ivan took it out.

Yeah I heard that too. I guess it's pointless to rebuild it when OCS is moving north to RI. What does that mean for the rest of the Pcola guys though? Of course no obstacle course, but what will replace it, or will it even be replaced? I guess this is a rhetorical question... it just seems like the course was a really big part of OCS. Maybe I'm wrong though.
