I think that had somebody wanted to keep extending the life of the airframe, the A-4 could still be extremely lethal. Think of it with a non A/B F404, ( I know...probably way too much motor)...and a few AIM-9X's slung under the wings.

I just read the Mig kill description in my Osprey Series on the A-4. Checked on www.acig.org and it looks like an Isreali A-4 pilot by the name of E. Dotan shot down two Mig-17's on 12 May 1970.
It was designed as a nuke-delivering device and back in the early fifties, nukes were BIG.
Probably had something to do with that huge ass thermonuclear device that those "stilts" were straddling....... On a one way trip no less!!
Is ATAC still flying them? Saw some taking off out of IWA (willie gateway pheonix) in my little Gooooosehawk (POS comparitivelly), perty sight.

ATSI are the guys at Willie - ATAC (mainly) hang out at Newport News, VA with the Kfirs and Hunters (and Drakens, but I think they've stopped with those). ATSI have certainly scaled back their operations - they sold 2 A-4Ns to BAE Systems in Germany and a couple of others to ATSI, although I don't know if they have them yet. Reports of any sightings welcomed. Last May ATSI was helping Raytheon with JSOW-ER tests. There's a press release here:

I was out at Willie a couple weeks ago and didn't see a single Scooter. The ATSI hangar no longer has their logo on it. Can't say for sure if they are TU, but they sure aren't the presence they were before. I am guessing they are done for. Maybe they succumbed to a lawsuit over the fatal Salt Lake crash. Bummer.

Actually, as I remember, when Walt got to our squadron he was fresh out of “A” school. It was our habit to just toss our ears anywhere in the line shack. Walt, being new, didn’t realize we all had our own personal set of ears and he would grab any set when heading out for a launch. After berating Walt painted one side of his ears red so that he could readily identify them.

Not at all. In fact, Singapore did exactly that to create the A-4SU Super Skyhawk out of their USN surplus Skyhawks they got from Davis-Monthan.
The A-4SU featured a General Electric F404-GE-100D turbofan rated at 10,800 lbs of thrust. The last of the Super Skyhawks were retired in 2005 when they were replaced by the F16.

What is with the canopy on the first Scooter,is it a TA-4 or is that the humpback pkg? Looks like a bulged canopy on the back.
