Anyone know what the general sentiment is on those IA tours as far as their effect on your record for selection boards and what not? Those worth some brownie points?

Brett

I was talking to the Placement O, and he mentioned it might be a "good" (for the board) post DH joint tour. I don't know how long a comptetitive tour would be.

On the Navy side, an email went out straight from Pers saying that it was going to be required for everyone as a check in the box. That sounds all well and good, but just isn't feasible for guys who are in their shore tour now (like me). There's just not enough time to do both an IA and a disassociated tour AND still do your first shore tour. And what's the point of the shore tour? To recharge and make you forget about deployments. What was put out in the email was that these aren't just 179 day orders, they're orders sandwiched w/ a prep time and post "deprogramming" time, so "they" say it come out to a year or so.

I agree. A lot of the dudes that got picked up on non-flying, or staff billets for their first shore duties, were pretty much told to stand by for world-wide IA assignment. However, the impression I had was that it was post DH for the XO/CO track in order to fulfill a joint requirement. From the emails and photos I've received from guys filling the IA billets, it appears to be arduous duty. Who really knows what the situation will be in a few years. I'm already pencil'd in for an afloat disassociated tour; the key word being "pencilled." I'm taking the bonus, so my orders negotiating position is a bit on the weak side.

I know I've addressed this issue, maybe even in this thread, but "policy" promulgated via email by some detailer or other low level NPC functionary, vice those who actually write policy, should be viewed with suspicion.

A very good point. Let me back pedal. The particular email I have had about 10 forwards on it. Not sure of the paygrade of who started it, but in the middle I saw my shore detailer's name (which lended authenticity to me) and a bunch of other VP names (I got the email from a VP bud who checked in w/ me). I meant the email as only reinforcement of the idea, not necessarily as policy stated.

They are using reservists, to some extent (I know a few who've volunteered). Problem is, they want folks with some kind of operational experience, and finding reservists with that qualification who are also willing to go to the sandbox is tough. Next in line, shore tour folks.
Shut the hell up zab. I'm trying to keep a low profile here!;)
