If you need facts to tell you that pot is bad for you and that it DOES have long term effects then read the below from the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

NIDA said:
How Does Marijuana Affect the Brain?

Scientists have learned a great deal about how THC acts in the brain to produce its many effects. When someone smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the body.

THC acts upon specific sites in the brain, called cannabinoid receptors, kicking off a series of cellular reactions that ultimately lead to the “high” that users experience when they smoke marijuana. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. The highest density of cannabinoid receptors are found in parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thoughts, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.1

Not surprisingly, marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off.2 As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time.

Research on the long-term effects of marijuana abuse indicates some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term abuse of other major drugs.
For example, cannabinoid withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system3 and changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine.4 Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse.

You know what, I don't care if you get cancer from nicotine, your liver quits from alcohol or you gain 50 IQ points from just 1 joint. I do care if you choose to use a drug that is illegal. Just because you don't believe it should be outlawed doesn't mean it's ok to do it anyway. That's not how it works, you are supposed to gather support for your point of view, make a valid issue of it with the lawmakers, and change the law. THEN you can indulge your little heart out. If you hate nicotine and alcohol so much, then do the opposite and get them outlawed. That is the constitutional way of doing things. You did swear to support and defend the constitution didn't you?
I suppose, then, that you'd consider the civil rights movement of the 1960s the "wrong" way to effect change?

Our country was founded by people who felt that it was not only right, but a civic duty, to disobey laws that they feel are unjust. And if we want to talk Constitution, the Supreme Court first ruled that drug laws were un-Constitutional, then later on changed their mind.

I have nothing against alcohol and caffeine; I was simply pointing out the hypocricy in the current law.

i'll say straight up that drugs are a huge interest of mine and that i've had to work hard to not do them while in nrotc.

i think it takes a special person to be truly immune to the influence of drugs while the rest of us flounder about with this or that drug.

Fuck you. People like you make me puke. And stay the hell out of "my" Navy while you're at it ...

If "drugs are a huge interest" of yours ... I don't want you anywhere around me or anywhere around any of my airplanes.

By the way, I'm not "special" and I somehow managed to avoid "the influence".

Go try ImaPothead.org and "flounder" around their forums ... if you can navigate the keyboard.

I don't think smoking dope is quite up to equal standing as the Civil rights movement. I find those who want to smoke dope are in it for selfish reasons and not fighting for human dignity. I also think that as a Naval Officer, you don't have the freedom for social protest like happened in the 60's. You have the obligation to uphold the Constitution, follow the laws of the land and the UCMJ.

Being in the military you don't have option, so tough crap.

But it is still the law, which you are sworn to defend.

I think the FEAR of losing your scholarship due to being popped on an NROTC Whiz Quiz is probably what's keeping you drug-free. Like Hoover said, if it's really a that much of a temptation, then seek help.

If you think you'll do less whiz quizes after your commission, then you are sadly mistaken.

Nah I'm not doing this for the money. It isn't a temptation, it's an interest. Like chemistry.

Alcohol and caffeine are also drugs. A lot of people struggle with those too.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but ultimately, I think it comes down to functional doseage.

1 beer, 1 cigarette, and 1 coffee aren't (except in rare, unusual, allergenic / extenuting circumstances) "take you offline" for a while, or at least out of "normal, I can drive a car" parameters.

You may be functional after 1 rip off the bong, one little sniff of the white stuff, or a baby-syrigne of heroine, but you are often / always? out of parameters for normal function.

Drugs =/= abuse. The argument against illegal drugs is that any use it all is "abuse," on the basis of doseage. I believe.

Camp Pendleton is located in Southern California. California has 15% of the US pop + Its largest Cash crop is Marijuana. Especially now-a-days staying completely away from Marijuana in Cali while you grow up is practically impossible, you might not do it but a lot of people are subject to the ever dreaded PEER PRESSURE!!!

Oh please! For most people, it's not that big a deal if one has tried marijuana once or twice. For those of us who want to join the military, it is. Nothing more to it than that.

We all have fallen to peer pressure at some point or another, obviously some of us for worse things than others.

Lazer,

Yes, if you smoke up everyday, you're probably going to have some adverse effects. But getting drunk everyday would result in health effects that are far worse. Moreover, impairing memory for "a few weeks after extended use" is not a long term effect in my book. I have not seen any definitive study that outlines specific chronic diseases/conditions that result from marijuana use.

That section about dopamine can apply to any substance/activity/whatever known to man. Like most articles dealing with marijuana, it's trying to grasp at straws to make it sound worse than it is.
