Stinky's Reserve Saga/Blog/Helpful Hints

So here I am...

SoCal was way cooler when I was a single guy. I also think it would be way cooler if PSW was here with me. Good news is that when I went into Best Buy to get a new webcam (key element for geo-baching, and mine wouldn't install with Vista, who would have thought!!), it turns out that they had Wii Fit in stock. So now, I've got Wii Fit sitting in my hotel room, waiting for PSW to return from leave so I can mail it to her. But I digress.

So I'm dunker complete (and for those that need a dunker in the future and they're going to send you on the road to do it, Norfolk was the biggest non-event of a dunker I've ever experienced), and finally got out to California for the RAG. I'm quite surprised just how brief the syllabus is. I've already gotten all my classes, tests, and 1/3 of my simulators done - and I checked in 4 days ago. My first flight will be next week, and I'll be halfway done with the syllabus by the end of the week. Then I'll come to a screeching halt, because I have to wait on the HLL window for one friggin flight. They've already mentioned "FCF bitch", and I HATE being an FCF copilot. Oh well, it's worth it in the end.

Direct deposit is also fixed - and for those in the Reserves, or on the Active side - MyPay is the fastest way to get it fixed. If you have a MyPay account, you can sign up for direct deposit on the Internet.

I was doing a little digging, and I hope that Frumby can weigh in on this one. My DOR is July '03 (after returning to the USMC), so I expected that I'd be eligible for the Jan '09 Major's board. I took the $10K bonus, so I'm on the hook for 3 years in the SMCR in 774 (not like it's all that big of a deal, I plan to try and work it and stay here for the rest of my career). HOWEVER, I read MARADMIN 278/08 and I noticed this little gem:
C. ONE-YEAR RULE FOR RESERVE OFFICERS. RESERVE OFFICERS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION FOR PROMOTION IF, ON THE DATE THE BOARD CONVENES, THE OFFICERS HAVE CONTINUOUSLY PERFORMED SERVICE ON EITHER THE RESERVE ACTIVE-STATUS LIST (RASL) OR THE ACTIVE-DUTY LIST (ADL) (OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH LISTS) FOR A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR. SERVICE ON THE RASL INCLUDES SERVICE IN THE READY RESERVE (AR, SMCR, IMA, AND IRR) AND IN AN ACTIVE STATUS OF THE STANDBY RESERVE.

So does this mean that I won't be on the Reserve Majors board until Jan '10? Since I got my commission back March of '08, that's less than one year... Would that push me into the above zone category without even being looked at in zone? Am I stressing for no good reason?

I would first try and go through your command AdminO (if you have one) to see if they know anything about this, at the very least he should have some contact info for whoever the Marine equivalent to PERS is. You also might just want to ask around the squadron, I am sure that a few might have run into this, since your timing is similar to other guys getting out.

If I understand that instruction correctly, is it trying to say that you have to be reserves for a year or Reserves and Active for a year before the board. I had only two months in the reserves when I went to the board, and it was not an issue apparently. That is the Navy though, maybe Frumby knows.

Quick Update

The more things change...

Turns still build very quickly in a 110kt or 90 degree auto.

Tactical approaches are still a lot of fun.

Taxiing still isn't that easy.

Yes, that's right - I have flown my first 1.5 in a Phrog in 2 1/2 years. Everything is right with the world, and feels great.

Now all that needs to happen is PSW gets selected for LCDR, and gets orders to Norfolk. Then, I'll be flying the old girl as much as I'm supposed to!!

By the way - the smile still hasn't left my face... Damn, I missed this.

I know you're a newly wed, so I'll give you this tidbit. It's generally not nice, or smart, to call your wife old.

Not totally sure of the answer, but I can give you an educated guess. I'm a helo guy with about 1200 RW hours, and 100 SEL hours. ZERO multi-engine, and the C-130 squadron in New York asked me if I was interested in transitioning. When I did the research, I was going to have to go to Corpus for multi-engine, followed by in-house training on the C-130. So I don't think it would be as in-depth as the AF's program, but more in-depth than if you were already rated in a C-130.

Are you looking at a VMR det, or a Herc unit? I'm pretty sure you're not looking towards F/A-18's, since you're not an 18 pilot and the one Reserve 18 squadron is already overmanned.

I am a Junior Army Major (Aviation) with an extensive Infantry background. Will I have to attend TBS if I transfer to a Marine Reserve unit? Thanks!

Same situation...I am trying to get into a C-130 unit in NY. The only issue (more of a gift than an issue) is I was hired as a pilot with Customs in NY and really want to minimize my time away from the job. Meaning for training, I completely understand the obligation for deployments & TDY. If commited to a lengthy training cirriculum; such as the AF, I will probably pass. If it can be a few month FW qual. like the Navy..I am definetely in!
Talked to a buddy up at 452 in NY. He said without seeing your package, but the amount of multi hours you have - he thinks you'd have to go to Corpus for a reduced syllabus followed by in-house training worst case. Best case, just in-house training. He also said that if you got picked up, don't expect much more than 6-8 months on AD for worst case.

Hmmm... I know of O-3's that have gone to TBS, but I'm not sure about your situation. I can try and find out. My guess is that you probably would have to, because the Marine Corps likes all its officers/enlisted to have the same baseline training (Boot Camp/MCT for enlisted and TBS for officers). That's just a guess, but I'll see what I can find out.

No. If the Corps accepts you as a "similar" MOS, you will not have to attend TBS.

Active to Reserve the Easy Way

Although many don't initially consider it, remember that orange and white airplanes need reservists too. I'm on active duty in Kingsville and just applied to the Marine Reserve Unit (MCRIP Program) in my present squadron. The process?...Fill out RQS, get photo, send OMPF to P'Cola for the board. Couldn't have been easier (Of course I'll hear the board results in Dec/Jan). This way, you can go off active duty and come back as a reservist the next day.

The other good news is that 4th MAWTSG (check the website) conducts the board for all CNATRA Marine reservists, and I heard a rumor there were only two applicants and many positions. If you are considering a different service, it takes minimum 2 months after leaving active duty to join the other branch.

So look at Kingsville, Meridian, Corpus, Milton, P'Cola (Vance?) when you consider a reserve gig. Lots of opportunities and 2ndLts and Ensigns need all the help they can get.

Key points: 1) Accept the reserve commission, and application to the reserves can be done up to about 6 months of leaving active duty. 2) All CNATRA units have Marine reservists so you don't have to look at only Marine Reserve Squadrons. 3) PME takes a lot longer to complete than when we all did warfighting (now tracked online, or attendance with a seminar).

Another number I heard pertaining to this thread, and I have no clue if it's true or not, is that you can join the reserves with up to 40% disability.
