Mojo?

Hey Mojo,
Snowin like crazy where you are? Well, here's how my Christmas went--80 deg w/ 90% humidity. The condenser on my AC broke, so I contemplated calling an AC repair guy on Christmas but elected not to on general principle. In addition, the TURDUCKEN i got as a gift "exploded" after about 6 hours in the roaster...

What are you up to these days? Haven't been skiing for a few years (on snow at least) and I get the chills when the temp drops below 70. I just got word I'm picked up for the Marine reserves, still awaiting a class date with SWA, and I am expecting my 3rd kid in April. If the economy continues to crumble, and Uncle Obama starts messing with the airlines, I might have the do the unthinkable--take orders.... bacon

Federal LE age limitation

To add to 46Drivers information on the GS Law Enforcement stuff, the Customs and Border Protection Air Interdiction Agent position has received a waiver for the age 37 cutoff and has extended it out to age 40. I just recently submitted an application, it can all be done on line with electronic documents. Check out USAJobs if interested.

Guard 60 pilot IST to Marine Reserves

I'm a former enlisted Marine (46 avionics, Cpl.) now a commissioned helo pilot (60s and 47s for the Army Guard. I've been thinking about submitting an IST packet for the Marine Reserves, specifically for the HMLA 775 det in Johnstown, PA. What are the odds? If selected where would I pick up in the training pipeline? Would I have to attend TBS? Would I start from the beginning of the flight program or start at some intermediate point?

All but zero, the only aviators eligible to be reserve Marine aviators are former active Marine aviators.

There is a recent change in policy for those on AD attempting to go to the IRR, Active Reserve, Drilling Reserve or IMA. Since all these Reserve activities require a Reserve Commission, everyone is now required to submit a request for a Reserve Commission. Unlike before where you automatically got a Reserve Commission and fell into IRR assuming you did not resign your commission, SecDef via SecNav now has to approve all Reserve Commissions. The process is relatively easy for those that do not have adverse material on their OMPF. Adverse material also runs the gamut, from being a named witness on an investigation to the common ones - DUI. IG makes the determination and also a recommendation to SecNav on adverse cases. If you have IRR obligation, you will not be allowed to leave AD until your Reserve Commission is approved. If you do not have IRR obligation and your approval is not granted before your EAS, you will be dropped from all records following your EAS. You will have to start the Request for Reserve Commission afresh.
A simple diary entry with IPAC or your closest admin section can initiate the request. There is a 9 to 10 month backlog. From what I hear, the SecDef verifies and signs by hand.

...
I was doing a little digging, and I hope that Frumby can weigh in on this one. My DOR is July '03 (after returning to the USMC), so I expected that I'd be eligible for the Jan '09 Major's board. I took the $10K bonus, so I'm on the hook for 3 years in the SMCR in 774 (not like it's all that big of a deal, I plan to try and work it and stay here for the rest of my career). HOWEVER, I read MARADMIN 278/08 and I noticed this little gem:

So does this mean that I won't be on the Reserve Majors board until Jan '10? Since I got my commission back March of '08, that's less than one year... Would that push me into the above zone category without even being looked at in zone? Am I stressing for no good reason?

Any update on this? It's been a while, but I'm curious if you were eligible right away or if you had to wait a year.

The precept was right, I was ineligible for Major because I had less than one year of continuous service in the Marine Corps. So I had to wait a year. I just got selected on the board that was in January.

Another stupid question:

I was curious as to what your pay was while going through 164 to get refreshed. You got your basic pay, flight pay ($650 a month) and per diem, right?

Going through 164, I was on ADOS orders. Once you're over 30 consecutive days, ADOS orders are the same as being on active duty. I got base pay, flight pay, BAH and BAS. I was also TAD - so yes, I got per diem. Add in that the company I worked for at the time was VERY reserve friendly (they paid me the difference between my salary and base pay), and I made serious bank while refreshing. Too bad it only lasted 6 weeks...

Does Miramar have a reserve F18 unit?
No.

Time for a PPT slide!
That's an outdated slide. VMFA-142 has been cadre'd. There is one F/A-18 reserve squadron now, VMFA-112 in Fort Worth. HMH-769 and HMLA-775 have been decomissioned as reserve squadrons and commissioned as active duty squadrons - HMH-366 Hammerheads, and HMLA-467 Sabers - both at MCAS Cherry Point, NC.

It's been a while since I've posted - but I just read through this thread and realized that there's other good info that you may not know about. Truth be told, most people don't know shit about the reserves, until they join (I didn't).

Even though that slide shows 4th MAW units, there are other flying opportunities as a reservist with Active Duty units. What do I mean? There's something called IMA billets - which are reservists filling gaps for AD guys. I have friends flying C-12's in New River and Beaufort - both on IMA billets. Want to keep flying Phrogs? There are IMA billets at HMX-1 and VMR-1.

Your best bet before diving in head first is to shoot an email to a reserve guy you know, or just PM me - and we can look it up...

Just went through the whole process. Here is the latest MARADMIN (http://www.marines.mil/news/messages/Pages/MARADMIN080-11.aspx/). The prior service recruiter got all of my required paperwork together in December 2010. After shuffling papers around and getting a few things updated they sent off my application for reappointment March 9th. I was cautioned that it could take up to 12 months (see MARADMIN). My paperwork actually came back the second week of July 2011 and I was reappointed. So about 3 months to get my application together and send it off, and about 4.5 months to get it all the way up to the Senate Armed Forces Committee for signature and back. Better than 12 months right? Now I'm waiting on MOBCOM to enter my info back into MCTFS, then my 4th MAW application will be routed.

Just like Stinky said, if I could do it all over again, I would have just stayed in the IRR. The whole process would have been easier.
