Yes and the title of this thread is literally "stupid questions about naval aviation." If you are going to berate anyone for asking a stupid question it feels counterproductive to the point of a thread like this I would think. But hey, thanks for taking the time to reply. Hope you don't lead Sailors the same way you treat others here. You fellas keep it classy.
At what point did I berate you? I gave you my opinion, which is what your post solicited. Feel free to lighten up.

Stupid ???: I am an enlisted intel rate and was approved for designation as NAO after meeting the requirements. Is that something we place it in our signature block e.g (IW/NAO)? I've seen other sailors do it and the instruction doesn't seem to say yes or no...I feel like it's murky because it seemed to be originally an officer designation. I don't know how much it really matters or if anyone even cares but I'm curious what the consensus is. Thanks!

We had an intel o do it. He ended up logging several hundred hours in the helo, knew NATOPS thoroughly, and contributed as a part of the crew. I actually respected his opinion when he had issues with aircraft, etc.

The benefit, while he had no hard 'requirement' in his orders, was that he was better able to understand how to provide us pilots relevant and useful intel.

Was just reading up on NFO jobs and saw that you can end up being a yellow-shirt catapult officer on a carrier.

I had always thought that NFOs spent most of their time in designated aircraft. Do they do stuff like operating catapults during down time or what? Just curious about what all the possibilities are.

It would be on a non-flying tour. Helo/Maritime pilots also get this job on a non-flying sea tour.

Never knew there was a distinction between tours, thanks. I know I wont know everything before signing the dotted line, just trying to prepare as much as possible.

I'm not sure of you've seen the Navy Personnel Command's Aviation Career pipeline:

The Shooter tour could be your 2nd Sea tour.....or an afloat staff, or if you become a WTI, you could get a training officer job in the squadron. All of this will be based on luck, timing, and FITREPs.

When you sign on the dotted line, you are agreeing to a Minimum Service Requirement (MSR), which will take your through your 2nd sea tour (more than likely non-flying).
