Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Is there helicopter adversary pilots? An aggressor squadron for helicopters?

Depends on what you mean. The guys in Fallon used to have a “Red Air” painted up HH-60H that was used in Air Wing Exercises and the Seahawk WTI Course. Not sure if they have a -60S with the same paint job. Either way, there’s regularly a “red air”/adversary helo in large force exercises, much to the consternation of many an RMC.

If you mean “dogfighting”, it’s referred to as helicopter dynamic maneuvering and is a taught skill set, but there aren’t a lot of chances to get your Nicholas Cage Firebirds routine on in practice.

When the Seahawk fires a Hellfire, how does the crew lock on or get acquisition to fire at said target? If this is too OPSEC I'm sorry

I’m curious as well, because both times I’ve seen a H-60 fire a hellfire, they seemed to omit that step.

But to answer your question as a non-60 guy, they lase the target with their sensor/targeting pod

Are you sure they didn't have an old crappy B missile? Friend came back, reviewed the tapes and had a "valid shot," but a fin on the missile didn't work and it made an immediate right hand turn in front of the aircraft... we aren't exactly firing the newest missiles in training.

Bravos go into space shuttle mode routinely. However, the vast majority of training missiles shot are most likely Quebec. Still doesn’t omit the fact that Navy 60s like to lase windows and water while expecting effective impacts.... or fire in LOAL and forget to lase... or a myriad of other ways to fuck it up.

I don’t know specifically what caused their missiles to fly stupidly over the horizon, but based on the crew’s performances before and after the shots nothing would surprise me.

The Navy used to only get bravos for training up until a few years ago. A surge of fin failures made them reevaluate and now they won't issue them anymore.

I also haven't seen/heard of a Quebec being shot in the Navy, they tend to give us real warheads.
