Speaking of cold weather...

I've assembled my gear exactly as the current packing list on the official OCS site says, but... Do you think/know if the candio's will allow a stick of chapstick in the hygiene bag? Bloody, dry lips are a bitch...

Also, the official packing list says '3 packs of socks' (of course, a pack could be 2 or 10).
I went with 3 packs of 3... Same for t-shirts...
 
Chapstick is fine. Half the shit you bring is going to be told to put back in your suitcase and stowed away in your POV or a shipmate's POV.

You'll also discover little things along the way that you "would like to have". You will get opportunities to march to the NEX to restock your supply or pick up things that you forgot/would like to have....within the allowable rules of course. The candio who escorts you to the NEX should keep you on track with what is allowed and not allowed.

Also, is body wash ok or does it have to be a bar of soap? (Body wash is faster). Dumb stuff I know... As a Marine, I need it spelled out for me :eek:. Ha...

Swore in yesterday so just getting the final things ready before the games begin.
 
Congrats on swearing in. It was an emotional day for me. Wait till you swear in again with gold bars...that was even better!

Yeah, body wash is fine. The soap bar just gets messy when you have to keep storing it after use.

Yes, swearing in is something that makes you think. As I was raising my right hand, some guy was walking in the office to get info for the first time. I couldn't help but think that was me -- 18 months ago. 1 rejection and a masters degree later, I'm finally getting my shot. Not a process for those that can't wait...

On a side note, after getting sworn in, I was talking to the LT (never seen him in the office before). I asked him if he had any advice for me about OCS. He said, 'not really sure... I didn't go to OCS'. I replied, 'oh, academy? ROTC?' He said, 'no... I'm a reservist. I got a dircom a few years ago'. Damn DIRCOMers! :) They've got it made... No OCS and can mobilize at will -- particularly in the post-9/11 era.

You'll lose weight your for 6-7 weeks at OCS, and then as soon as you hit candio phase you'll probably gain a little bit of it back. When you're not burning 7000 calories a day, yet continuing to eat the same way you were when your body was constantly energy-starved you'll notice a difference really fast.

Dumb question.. When we order uniforms at OCS, which ones are typically ordered? Do they just give you what is prescribed at OCS, or can you choose which uniforms you would like to have? For example, can you choose to have a 'choker' style white uniform ordered instead of a summer white? I was just looking through the site below and I noticed some uniforms that I would much rather have over others. I also have no clue when each uniform is to be worn, so what is a 'basic' wardrobe that will get a new ensign by for a couple years?

You understand that uniforms are prescribed for wear, right? It's not like a wardrobe where you pick and choose which look is more 'you'. Specifically, summer whites are a step down in formality from chokers. I guess the rough civilian equivalent would be business casual, whereas chokers are a dressier getup you'll wear maybe once a year (if that).

You're asking about AWGs? Really? There are at least two very long stickied threads about Greens, their imminent demise and efforts to save them.

Alright that puts things more in perspective. I just read things on the board about which uniform pieces look the best, and which ones people from different communities wear and I got curious. Thanks for the help! Is there a typical wardrobe that everyone owns then? Or do you eventually have to own most of the uniforms?

There's the 'required seabag' for officers, and there's what you can get away with. Khakis are your daily wear until you are almost done with API. From then, it's flight suits 99% of the time and khakis on duty, maybe, depending on the squadron skipper's preferences.

I'll let recent OCS'ers chime in on what uniforms you have to buy there.
 
I just finished ocs a few weeks ago. You do not get to pick and choose uniforms. You are told what to get. you will buy 3 sets of NWU's, a set of dress blues and choker whites, 1 set of khakis (i bought a second set as to not have to iron and wash a set all the time), 1 set of summer whites and associated belts ect. You have no say in any of this really. You will just show up for fitting in the begining of training and then pay it all off at the end. Buying 3 sets of nwu's sucks because rarely will you even need 1 set. Uniforms are expense. my total uniform bill when I left Newport was in the ballpark of 2600 dollars.

How much do you make during OCS? Do you pretty much just make enough to cover your expenses?
 
There you go. For SNAs and SNFOs, that digis-to-khakis rato is the opposite of what you'll actually use once you're in the TRACOM, but if that's what they're requiring, that's what you're going to buy.

There was some discussion in another thread about how many sets of khakis you should have. I'd say two at a bare minimum, preferably three. Keep one looking shit-hot in case shit-hotness is needed at a moment's notice, cycle the other two for daily wear. You can go down to one set of khakis after API.

Don't know what to do with the other sets of Digis. Guess the trousers would make good cutoff yardwork/hang out shorts - that's what I did with my four pair of DCU trousers after my IA.
