when you get tested for the mile swim what gear do you have on? full gear? goggles allowed? and how long do you have to tread water(in full gear?)?

That sounds like it could happen to anyone (except for naturally more advanced swimmers who don't worry about this anyway).

How crowded are the lanes during the mile swim?

Depends on the size of your API class...and how many lanes are available...my lane only had about 12 total...got spread out quick though...just had to be careful...

flight suit...not sure about boots...but goggles are allowed...treading water is no problem just do it how they tell you and you will be fine...

Just a flight suit for the mile... goggles are allowed. You tread water for 3 minutes in full gear followed by 2 minutes of floating. Its not hard.

waves might crash over your head causing you to aspirate water and possibly drown... most of those rules are written in blood.

Huh? So how is that worse than me not putting my head back, tiring myself out, and aspirating water?

You have a better chance of not aspirating water when your head is up because you can see the wave coming, as opposed to having your head back and the wave comes from behind. In a real life scenerio, if you get that tired treading water, your better bet is to drown proof (although I know in the class its required to tread for two min).

I'm with you on the science of thing, but you're missing my point. If I'm tired, I may not be able to keep my head above water, so having it upright does me no good. As for using drownproofing, that makes more sense, but of course you have to calm yourself down and force yourself to manage your breathing, and in that sense, that's why the training is pretty good. They (or you ;) ) force you to either tread or drownproof and not cheat on your back, which makes you manage your breathing, and for some, manage the panic.

"Keep your head above the water, and breathe, with your head above the water!" Wait, that was Thumbtanic. My bad.
