I’m surprised only 1 spot for an amphib. Japan is definitely great, was stationed on a CG for 4 years in Yokosuka. Amazing time, short underways (maybe changed now because I heard my previous ship just did a 7-9month deployment). I would like to go either Spain or Florida next.

No spent 5 years in SE gerogia right above Florida state line. My family and I have never been on east coast or OCONUS. Want to try new places for them

I was told to avoid Japan at all cost. A friend of mines say they are over worked there. I was hoping that if I ever went it would be different.

We are definitely overworked there, we go underway, come back to fix what’s broken, have some kind of navy inspection, go back underway and repeat. The benefits: you get paid way moreeeee, you get to live in Japan which is great and most people don’t want to leave after their first tour (know people that been there for over a decade). If you want a career, I’m pretty sure Japan is the way to go because of constant underways you will get qualified faster, do more exercises with other fleets that you can put on your evaluation. While I’m the states you will go on 7-9 month deployment, come back and stay in port for over a year (you may have small underways here and there) and by then you are pretty much checking out.

Yea, main concern is my family. I know I will work long hours as Officer. Pretty much expect that as a leader. Just want to have time for my family when i am not underway or on deployment.

and that is something that definitely needs to be talked about, benefits of Japan is that your family will experience Japan, SOOO many places they can go to while you underway and have a great time. Your kids can learn Japanese and their culture which is a big benefit. You should talk to your wife if she rather you be away for 2-3 months instead of 9 months. A lot of divorces happen because 9 month deployments (where either side cheats and finds out) is too much for the wife while 2-3 months are much easier especially in Japan where like I said, they wont be bored to death. The wifes are much closer over there as well because they don't speak Japanese to make friends outside and end up hanging out together and that will also help in your relationship because they help each other by talking about their own experiences.
Something to think about.

You can only use TA to get a higher education so if you have your AA you can use it for a BS/BA or if you have that already you can use it towards a masters.

Nicholsq, since you already went thru OCS. What was a typical day looking like for the indoc phase?
Your pretty much busy most of your day until about 1700. Mostly busy with rifle drill practice, preparing for RLP inspection, and classes on basic naval policies. After evening chow which is around 1700 you'll have the rest of the day to yourself. Depending on your class team....that's the time they may allow you to make a nex run.

Okay and I figured that includes getting PT during all those time as well.
