The basics of API

The more things change...when I did API they were dropping Navy studs left and right, and Marines were being kept pretty much no matter what. (Yeah Yeah, the Marines in my class still had the highest test average, despite the Navy studs bitching non-stop about how they had to worry about NSS and how we supposedly didn't give a fuck...)

Hmm....could be that 30% of the Marines can't figure out that "gauge" is spelled "gouge." Keep furiously googling that marinegauge, I'm sure you'll find it eventually.

Apparently this "gauge" isn't too bad, because there are enough guys with shiny gold things under their usernames who have used this "gauge" with good results.

As C420sailor alluded to, you are more than welcome to update the "gauge" to be more relevant in September of 2012 than it was in January 2006 when it was written by Crowbar (who, "oh, by the way," is an NFO with numerous combat deployments under his belt and "MOS Credibility" on his record).

BTW, welcome back after your two-year hiatus from posting. We look forward to your updated API "gauge" submissions, as well as any future "gauge" you might have about the rest of your CNATRA experience.

....The basics of API haven't changed in years. You take a few (relatively easy) tests, you do some swimming, hit up the dunker and some basic land survival. Don't suck, don't fail and don't be a douchebag. What else is there to know?
 
^^Pretty good suggestion. Also, the O-club is pretty good now, just a bit slow getting the food out. Its usually packed for lunch.

Sounds like it hasn't changed much since I went through in '08. Was still busy but slow last time I was there in July, bouncing getting ready for deck cert.
 
Haha, yea, sorry guys, I wrote gauge opposed to gouge. Meant no disrespect, I simply found a lot of misleading information on this thread. Everyone who gets through API says it is simple, and people about to go through API who are not as bright may take it for granted creating 30% attrition rates. A few of my close buddies attrited, and I figured if I could help one person get through by not taking it for granted, then it would be worth it for me to post. Once again, sorry for saying gauge, instead of gouge, I am a stupid person, and that is why had to work my ass off in API.

I didn't mean it like that at all. All I was saying is not to get false security, rely on gouge, and not study A LOT. Almost everyone I spoke to, or what I read on this said that API was relatively easy. Granted, I am not the brightest person, and had to study my ass off at USD to graduate with honors with an easier degree such as finance, but I would have really appreciated a handful of people telling me it isn't easy, it is actually difficult for someone who is a complete stranger to aviation. Then I probably would have studied more prior. I believe it would be more beneficial for me to come in here and tell everyone it is not too easy, so then the slower people such as myself properly prepare, and do not start API behind the eight-ball.

As for gouge, there is more gouge than needed, but at some point, you have to just read the pubs, and study the material opposed to use gouge. A majority of the gouge in the dropbox has errors, a lot of new test types have been released, such as the FRR. And the only thing I propose is to study as much as possible before to get a start on it. My success came from simply memorizing and understanding the ELOs. I could have looked at all the gouge in the world, and nothing is as comprehensive as the ELOs. I don't understand why everyone is so hostile, I am trying to help the upcoming students prepare by telling them not to take API lightly, opposed to saying it is a breeze, and don't worry about it, you'll be fine. 30% attrition says otherwise. I understand that API was not hard for many people on here, but it was hard for me, and about half the Marines I went through with, and all of us agree that we got the idea that it would be easier than it really was. My gouge is to literally memorize all the ELOs for the upcoming exams, study your ass off, and don't rely on all this gouge being passed around (as there is bad gouge sprinkled throughout the dropbox), that is the only way to ensure you will cover all of the material on an exam.

30% attrition rate? 80 is still passing correct?


Primary/Intermediate/Advanced only get progressively harder. You'll look back and realize that API isn't that hard as long as you put in the work that is required.
