ADHD Waiver Question

When I was 6 or 7 years old I was diagnosed with adhd by a psychologist (not psychiatrist). Shortly after this I got prescribed meds for it however I never got the prescription and have never taken any meds for them ever. This has been a non issue since then and I am currently in college and doing well. Also I have never had an IEP or any learning accommodations. I looked on the NAMI waiver guide and it seems I would need to do the following

1. Get all school and medical records related to this
2. All college transcripts
3. A letter from my university saying I never required learning accommodations
4. A personal statement saying I did not use meds

Are there any other medical things I will need to do before hand? For example, seeing a psychiatrist and getting a letter from them saying I don’t have ADHD. Looking through this forum it seems these type of waivers don’t come easily from NAMI.

I can imagine NAMI will look at the MEPS paperwork when you go through that process.

If I was your recruiter I would feel hopeful on you getting cleared based on what you have said, get everything to your recruiter and have them submit it all.

I don’t know if I would need a waiver from meps for it because their standards are as follows

ADHD is considered a disqualifying condition if any of the following exists alongside the diagnosis:
  • A recommended or prescribed Individualized Education Program (IEP), 504 Plan, or work accommodations after the 14th birthday;
  • A history of comorbid mental disorders;
  • Prescribed medication in the previous 24 months; or
  • Documentation of adverse academic, occupational, or work performance
I don’t meet any of the criteria for this so I don’t think meps would DQ me, but I think NAMI would require a waiver. At least that’s my understanding

What I meant to say is you’ll probably need to disclose and provide documentation at MEPS. Along with that and MEPS’ review and inputs that is probably all NAMI would need to see.

Open question from an old guy…so a one-off diagnosis that never went anywhere? How would the Navy know you had been diagnosed?

My understating is that they would be able to see it from the MHS Genesis software that contains a person’s medical records. However, I could be wrong.

Ok, do you think I would need to get some kind of statement from a psychiatrist or should I be good with the listed documents from the original post?

Old guy, welcome to the “new world”.

Damn...

These days, Harris, who has been a Navy recruiter since before Genesis, said many recruiters he knows are on antidepressants — one of the very things for which Genesis screens applicants.

I would not have gotten in today.

No. When you work with a recruiter on the MEPS process they’ll tell you what documents you need to provide to include clinic/visit notes and pharmacy records.

I wouldn’t pay out of pocket for consults, evaluations, doctors notes, etc. unless you are directed by MEPS. There’s a chance you might not need to do this or if MEPS wants to look at it closer they will arrange a consult on their dime.

If you’re selected for OCS programs, your MEPS record is shipped to OCS. OCS medical and NAMI will see the medical condition, medical documentation, MEPS’ review and notes, and then make a determination. If there were ever any concerns, more than likely you would have been DQ’d from the start.

This is what I’m trying to say, don’t over think this and just take it one step at a time with MEPS.

Supposedly they are making changes because it has made it harder for them to meet recruitment numbers. At least according to this new revision:

Understood, thank you for the info.

Wanted to pick someones brain here and ask if its common to fly with a food-related allergy (with waiver) or is NAMI nowadays just DQing everyone and everything?

What food are you allergic to and also how severe is the allergy (anaphylactic or mild)?
