23 February 1945: Four days after the initial landings on Iwo Jima, 1stLt Harold G. Schrier led 40 men from Company E, 2d Battalion, 28th Marines, up Mt. Suribachi to secure the crest and raise the small American flag that battalion commander LtCol Chandler Johnson had given Schrier. Within an hour, the patrol reached the rim of the crater. After a short fire-fight with Japanese defenders emerging from several caves, the small American flag was attached to an iron pipe and raised over the island.

(Yes, I know this is the second flag raising and not aviation related.)
Good call. My grandfather (still alive) spent the better part of a month living and fighting on the island. He was a 17 year old (lied about his age) mortar man. He doesn't talk about it much, but still has a deep hatred for the Japanese. As a segue to the "geedunk" thread, he fought in two campaigns and has 6 ribbons/medals including the Purple Heart and a helmet with a hole shot through it. Was given the option of an immediate commission and a chance to go to Okinawa or flight school. Chose flight school and hadn't yet flown an airplane when the war ended. Met my grandmother who was in college (NAS DeLand, FL) and the rest is history. He still flies a Marine Corps flag outside his house much to the chagrin of his south Florida neighbors.

Should be you won't have to sweat your Son being sent into the 'ghan morass, Time to let them bomb each other to death, instead of our kids. Looks to me now, that all of our sacrifices in the Mideast were pretty much for naught.:(

My eldest, BzB Jr. did 2 tours in the 'raq, and luckily, came back unscathed and now (military) retired.:)

Just as to the whole Afghanistan thingie…right, wrong, or indifferent: We will NEVER "tame" Afghanistan. Don't believe me…ask the Brits, the Russians, and well…crap..now you can ask us, I guess. It's a muddy sink-hole for lives and national treasure. I don't think it can ever be done…too many cultural differences…and they don't give two craps about Democracy...and they simply grow too much "product" available from nowhere else. Just to be fucking CLEAR: Heroin, hashish, opium, crack…the "pain solutions" for today. Money talks…bullshit walks.

"Afghanistan is not just a war, but a country of many ordinary yet unique people, kind and cruel, rich and poor. Not least of all, the inescapable fact: the solution to the opium trade – and the war – lies not in bullets or military strategy, but in addressing the root cause, which is the demand for the drug in the west." [Can't site it…but I totally ripped that snippet from somewhere else on the internet…]

Good luck with that.

I am pretty lucky (ie blessed). I saw this today while on a training flight...yes I know, not strictly aviation, but I was airborne, and it was cool`
Yep…pretty cool. Probably 90% of Naval Aviation is the "cool shit you get to see and do". This is a GREAT example…and a nice pic. :)

Is that a sonobuoy splash at about 8 o'clock…or a missed harpoon throw?

That is awesome, Did you have to fight the temptation to call for the swimmer to get out? (Just to shake things up in back of course!)
