Funny little story here: I only worked around the, A-5 one time it was a det aboard the Indy for quals. We were in the middle of the, Atlantic during the winter and it was cold. I headed up to the roof one morning for ops and found they had an A-5 spinnin’ to melt the ice on the flight deck that had formed during the night. The plane was really low to the ground, and the heat from the exhaust could be directed to the ice on the deck. Some ships company flight deck PO looked at a few of us and said, “ That’s all this thing is good for.”

A Caravelle tried to do that with fog in Switzerland, going up and down the runway to try and burn some off before it took off. Unfortunately they rode the brakes the whole time and they caught the wheels on fire after takeoff, resulting in a crash. Let's hope they had the Vigi choked and chained!

Yes, they did have her chocked and chained. They were breaking her down, and chockin’ and chainin’ her down all around the deck.:) I am sure the pilot was having the time of his life. ;)

Before they were the Bandits, they were the Seahawks. VF-126 flew TA-4Fs and TA-4Js and was based at NAS Miramar and provided jet instrument training for the SoCal squadrons.

Photo taken somewhere between Pensacola and Texas, 4th of July weekend, 1975.

Matter of fact, VF-126 provided instrument "training" for all FLEET bound NUGGETS ... it was actually more like a post-grad "refresher course" and your initial orders to a FLEET-SEAT read: "report VF/VA-whatever (RAG) VIA VF-126 ... "

It was for EVERY newly winged jet Aviator after completion of the TRACOM and done prior to reporting to the respective RAGs .... SERE & DWEST were usually (basically always) included in this initial visit to the SoCal Op Area ...
