You may already know this but I'm sure somebody out there doesn't.
When a MEU goes composite, it typically has 46s (Ospreys in some cases), 53s, Hueys, Cobras, and Harriers. They all administratively become part of one big happy HMM (or VMM) family until the deployment is over.
BITD, my Pops was at HQMC and worked on the proposal for the HMM(REIN) concept. One thing I'm not clear on - and he doesn't remember - is why it was decided to make a temporary composite squadron rather than organize standing, deploying composite Air Wings like the Navy. I'm sure there were reasons, I'm just curious what they were. Not that reinventing wheels is a new idea for the Navy or Marines.
