It's British. Why do they pronounce it as "aluminium" when it's spelled aluminum?
Actually, I asked our Brit exchange officer. As he pointed out - it's spelled aluminium in the UK, and it was named by a British chemist in 1812. So technically, we're spelling/saying it wrong.

Pretty bad when a Navy MC mistakes a Navy Helo for an Army one....even with big clue: N-A-V-Y on side

090712-N-0860R-124 GULF OF MEXICO (July 12, 2009) Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 2nd Class Della Smith, a landing signal enlisted (LSE) aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), directs an Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter assigned to Joint Task Force Bravo to a landing aboard the ship. Makin Island departed Pascagoula, Miss., July 10 and is currently circumnavigating South America via the Strait of Magellan to its new homeport of San Diego. During its transit, the ship will make port visits in Brazil, Chile and Peru. Makin Island is the final amphibious assault ship built in the LHD-1 Wasp-class, but the first of the class built with Gas Turbine Engines and an electric drive. The ship is scheduled to be commissioned in October. (U.S. Navy Photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Justin Webb/Released)
Pretty sure that it's a cute and paste error. A CH-47 did bounce on the Makin Island, and the caption on navy.mil is identical for both pictures.

I'm pretty surprised that they didn't release the photos of us. We were the first ever helicopters to land on that ship.

And why does everyone have such a hard on for working with SEALs? From a flying/tactical standpoint they're no different than fastroping/rapelling/SPIE rigging/helocasting/softducking Army, Marine etc... At least from a pilot's perspective.

...and the act of fastroping is largely just hovering at XX ft. Can be sporty in LL/brown out. But LZ Green? Just hovering.

Casting anyone from the helo is just the same as SAR jumps, except "tactical", unless we throw in the NVD thing again.

That explains a lot. I've always wondered about that.

I saw that too. For being MCs, they ain't the most observant when it comes to writing captions.

Hah. True. Next pic I expect to see on here is the following with the caption, written my MC3 schmuckatelli, talking about an F/A-18E superhornet lining up on the cat for a shot off of the CVN USS Clinton....

Personally I thought those Marines wore the Aussie patches on purpose, for the duration of the exercise...or for shits and giggles.

Yeah, but either some Devil Dog got the super-slick tigerstripes on his helmet, or that's not a Marine in the left seat.

Perth was great yes....... but Hobart, Tasmania was unbelievably awesome!

A long time ago after a joint exercise with the Aussies, Sydney denied us a port call because we were a 'nuke'. So we (VF-1 aboard USS Enterprise) went to Hobart instead. 1st US warship there since WW-II! And by far the best port call ever!!! Commemorated by the below well-worn patch a few of us designed and had made in the PI, and everyone in our squadron wore long after. :D ;)

The patch collector crowd on Tomcat Sunset/F-14 Association Forum would go absolutely nuts over that patch. Would you might cutting and pasting it over there as well (and then standby for MDog to lead the charge to try and buy it from you!).

Cheers, HJ

Oh, MDog is way ahead of you. He requested and I sent him a hi-res image of the patch some months ago. I believe it is being incorporated in a future book with a compilation of all the varied Tomcat patches.

But I will post a pic there too.

Cheers.
