150 decibels... I found a comparison: "a 747 taking off on a runway 300 feet away is about 120 decibels."

You do not want to be on the receiving end of the LRAD. It will literally drop you to your knees.

We actually received a tasking order to blast Phil Collins at pirates that had hijacked a cargo ship about 2 years back.

Not sure if it brought them to their knees...but somebody in 5th/6th Fleet (forget who had Africa then) had a sense of humor.

A couple of things. The first is that I am having trouble thinking which Phil Collins song would be the best weapon. The second is that I am wondering if Phil Collins is actually aware his masterful creation is being used as a weapon in a Val Kilmer "Real Genius" sort of way.

Possibly an ignorant question... why use something like an LRAD against pirates? If all that happens to pirates is that they get scared off by some noise, why would they stop? Bullets are cheaper and easier. And probably a better deterrent.

I can understand using it against unruly crowds or something where you care about the lives of the people involved... but against pirates? Those pirates certainly don't care about YOUR life.

I hope so, but I wouldn't bet my life on it without a backup plan.

"...we hijacked some of them even after they fired the sonic guns. Truly
speaking, when we go to sea we are drunk..."

I don't know if the article is genuine or not. In this context I think an alternate translation for "drunk" would be "high/stoned" as in high on qat.

For the record being on the business end of an LRAD is not on my list of fun things to do someday :)

Two questions:
Was Nancy Pelosi aware of that?
Do they need to pay Phil Collins royalties every time they do that?

Another catch and release episode

web_090602-N-0000X-001.jpg

090602-N-0000X-001 GULF OF ADEN (June 2, 2009) Royal Marines embarked aboard the Royal Navy frigate HMS Portland (F 79) investigate two suspected pirate skiffs in the Gulf of Aden. The skiffs, with 10 people aboard, were equipped with extra barrels of fuel, grappling hooks and a cache of weapons that included rocket propelled grenades, machine guns and ammunition. Due to insufficient evidence to directly link the group to a specific attack, the suspected pirates were disarmed and released. Portland destroyed one of the skiffs and confiscated the weapons. Is Her Majesty's RN getting soft in it's old age!?

My initial reaction too, then I read it again

"...insufficient evidence to directly link the group to a specific attack..."

and had two more thoughts:

-OK, so it's not necessarily illegal to possess any of that stuff out on the high seas (I know, I know, we have too many lawyers) even if that kind of gear goes way beyond fishing and self-defence.*

-I would bet there is more to this story, I give our British cousins the benefit of the doubt, and I should probably leave it at that.

* I used the Queen's spelling, but is it still funny if I have to explain the joke? Is this thing on???
