Commute over an hour from WVa to Fairfax for a 50k jet ranger job? You could probably drive the local school bus and do better.
Uhhhh, not really. Unless your defintion of 'short' is more than an hour.
Sarcasm is lost through the internets... I think those folks are insane, but there are plenty who do it.
Definitely! I have known a few folks who do it and others that have similar crazy commutes, 2.5 one way in a few cases. For some it is worth the brand new house that costs half or a third of what a 40 year-old dump would cost closer in but it certainly isn't for everyone. There are affordable places in Fairfax but it depends on what you are looking for, if you have a family, etc.
I do have to say when I see them flying I wish I was up there, my wife just gets annoyed by how loud they are when they fly low which is all the time where we live. The sound of freedom!
Especially in a job like that, where there is night work, a long commute would suck. After a full workday, driving 2 hours starting at 0200 is downright dangerous.
Any thoughts on how this will affect the industry? For those of us riding in the back, the option to fly direct vice having to connect is beautiful.

The re-engined 737 Max and A320neo jets offer a 15 percent fuel saving meant to cut costs on the shortest inter-city services. At the same time the revamp has added about 500 miles to their range -- just enough to allow the narrow-bodies to span the 3,000 miles between the eastern U.S. and Western Europe.
Narrow body long flights are already happening LAX-HNL/OGG/LIH/KOA with the Airbus 321H, and that's without the NEO engines. Start introducing the improved engines then you will start seeing the proposed services as mentioned in the article from JetBlue and of course NAI. It is a pitty that Boeing didn't revamp the 757 with new engines and avionics, I enjoyed flying it from BOS-CDG the one time I did it.
While the passenger side is relevant, you also have to understand that a lot of money is made on the cargo side of the operation. If the numbers hold out that you aren't weight limited for the routes, then I am sure you are going to see more Europe to America NE cities.
I personally find it depressing seeing all the shiny new 78s (and soon to be 350s) that international carriers are fielding (LAN, Avianca) when I am flying my south America routes.

Unable...bad hair day...besides, me being on the flight line is a FOD hazard.You should uncover on the flight line. It's a FOD hazard.
OK, so not a layover hotel. In fact, it cost a boat load of cash (Mrs Wink's birthday gift). BUT, it was made a heck of a lot less painful thanks to the free round trip first class flight and other discounts, and the airline salary and schedule makes it doable. So yeah, the Show, or its ancillary benefits, can still be a good gig.
