The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

A solid BZ to Websan for pouring honey in my wife’s ear last night regarding The Show.

We’ve been tossing around the different ideas of what I’m going to do when I grow up and have to leave the Navy. She’s shifted from the 20% Airlines camp with me to the 80% GO TO THE SHOW! with Hal and the rest after hearing “11 days of work a month for a six figure salary.”

We had a solid hour discussion about it today and now I have homework on how/when to get my ATP in the next 6-10 years...

My wife and I have been having that discussion for almost a year now. She's gone from "I thought you'd never consider that..." to "Let's do this!"

Currently in ATL for day 1 of the Delta-hosted CTP course.

I live in Nevada and have been based in CA for over 22 years. My paychecks go from Chicago to my checking account. California doesn’t know I exist. Never heard a peep from them. I do pay CA SDI.

Yeah, the CA disability thing sucks. And at my airline if you go on disability you are required to apply to CA for their disability benefit and then the company reduces their benefit to you by that ammount. So, you pay into it for years but get no benefit if needed. As to CA income tax, they came after me a couple years early in my career, now the chief's office in LAX makes the notifications for me. CA doesn't bother me.

Looking for current gouge on any and all military-friendly ATP practical courses... I'm somewhat schedule-restricted due to workups, so I may need to consider more than one in order to find a good calendar fit (mid-late June).

On the macro level, the airlines will be hiring like gangbusters for the next decade. The demand won't peak for another 7 years. Even if you start in a regional, you won't stay there long. Lots of churn as the main line carriers hire down into the regional feeder airlines.

On the micro level it's changing day by day and varies widely between recruiters and individual airlines. Lots of gouge is out of date. This is especially true for helo bubbas, who are now prime candidates for hiring.

Thanks. AFAIK, the rule change only affected the prerequisites for the ATP written, but it's good to know.

I'm working with Sanders at the moment, trying for the end of June. Got a couple of backups in mind. Thanks, everyone for the gouge.

True, but over the course of a career, the average quality of life for someone hired today will be dramatically better than for someone hired in 7 years.
