Cooper is one of five Navy Sailors aboard the three-masted barque on its 18-day 3,149 miles long voyage from New London, Conn., to Rota, Spain. Originally commissioned Horst Wessel by German Navy in 1936, she was recommissioned USCG Eagle in 1946, and her permanent crew of 55 Coast Guard Sailors are joined by hundreds of cadets and officer candidates for sail training every year. Participating ships and aircraft from Canada, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Mexico and the United States fired a variety of weapons at Connolly during the exercise. UNITAS Gold is the 50th iteration of the annual multi-national maritime exercise, which provides the opportunity to conduct and integrate joint and combined land, maritime, coast guard and air operations in a realistic training environment. (May 16, 2009) Alma Bernice Clark Gravely, ship's sponsor for pre-commissioning unit (PCU) Gravely (DDG 107) enjoys her applause after breaking the traditional bottle of Champaign over the ship's bow, during the christening of the latest Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, named in honor of her husband the late Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, Gulf Coast. The ship is the 57th in her class, and honors Vice Adm. Gravely who was the first African American to command a major warship, achieve flag rank, and to command a numbered fleet. Also in attendance was the Acting Secretary of the Navy B.J. If I'm not mistaken, that's the USS RAMAGE (DDG-61) which is the ship I'm on.
I have a ton of pics from our 08-09 deployment to 5th Fleet. A few got submitted to the PAO for navy.mil

Massive UNREP..we met up with the IKESG on their way to start their deployment as we were making our way through the Med towards the good old East coast.

That link should take you to all of the pictures I took from the gulf to getting home. We stopped in Bahrain, Cyprus and Sicily. I didn't get out to the ship until they were already in the gulf...had just finished OCS and gone through Jr. SWOS.
