Don't swim where sharks eat.

Then how the hell am I supposed to kick one's a$$ when it messes with me? Be like that kid's uncle in Pcola a few years ago when he beat up the shark and got the kid's arm back. Granted it wasn't a great white, but still.

More brilliancy in action... swimming near people fishing in waters known to be shark infested. Goooood idea (not on the kid... parents should have known better). I've always hated swimming where there are surf fishers... more because I don't like the thought of being caught on a hook than getting eaten by a shark, but still.

I remember that story though when it happened, AMAZING he survived. Tough kid.

It's a little known fact that Jaws and Chuck Norris are one in the same.

Have you ever seen the pictures of all the sharks at Pcola Beach in the summer with the swimmers less than 100 yds away? We always looked for sharks on our flights along the beach to/from MOB or PFN, they get right up to the sand bars a little way out.

Haha

No it's courtesy of Wikipedia. I know, they're suspect with accuracy, but I've been "studying" sharks since I was a kid, it's accurate.

Pretty cool, I didn't know they roamed that far and wide. I wonder if they like kayaks as much as they like surfboards, cause if they do I'm gonna have to keep that in mind.

Kayakers have been attacked I believe, but not nearly as often. Surfers are prime targets because they have the torpedo shape and the 4 ampendeges... at least that's the theory behind it. In reality, unless you're swimming where they feed, the threat is so low. Swimming on Pensacola beaches with the Bull sharks... or off Miami with the Lemon sharks... have fun :) Tigers sharks are fun too.

Well, heck. As long as we are this far off the topic:

I've heard if it's overcast one is more likely to encounter sharks. Is this true?...and is it because they feed in shallower waters when it's not so sunny?

I don't know if that's true. I do know if you swim with a porkchop around your neck, you're more likely to encounter a shark.

Eight-year-olds, Dude...
You have a better chance of winning the lottery then being attacked by a shark. There's plenty of other sh!t to worry about.

-Odds (lifetime) of dying in a shark attack: about 1 in 1.8 million (for years in which there was a shark attack death).
-Odds of dying in a car crash: 1 in 228.
-In a plane (or other powered aircraft) crash: 1 in 6,137. (way higher for pilots obviously)
-From a fall: 1 in 229.
-In a lightning strike: 1 in 56,439.
-In an earthquake: 1 in 120,161.
-In a flood: 1 in 413,887.
-By being shot to death by someone else: 1 in 315.
-From an accidental fireworks discharge: 1 in 744,997.

I'm just gonna try to keep the plane from crashing, sharks can stay on the back burner.
