Sorry wannabe's......2 less jets for slots.....that will skew the % that get jets I'm sure ;)
The smartass remark and lighthearted nature of my comment is not out of line. All of the aircrew were safely recovered and had they not, I certainly would not have made a smartass remark. I have lost 26 people 22 of which were in aircraft in the past 7.5 years I have been in the Navy. I am hardly a smartass remarker unless the time is right and appropriate.

what percent of RL officers get jets?

Ahhh, I now understand what they mean by "needs of the Navy." :p

All joking aside, I'm glad all three "pilots" are safe. The article said one jet had two pilots and the other had one... I'm assuming they're referring to the NFO as a pilot as well. I can't imagine the confusion the reporter would cause if they had written "two aviators and an NFO." :D

Navy Release

No Fatalities as Two F/A-18s Crash in Persian Gulf
Story Number: NNS080107-07
Release Date: 1/7/2008 2:21:00 PM

From U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs

PERSIAN GULF (NNS) -- Teams from USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) rescued all three aviators after an F/A-18E and an F/A-18F that crashed during operations in the Persian Gulf Jan. 7.

The three aviators are safely back aboard the aircraft carrier, and are reported in good condition following an ejection.

The Super Hornets, from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, were providing en route close air support from Iraq when they crashed. CVW-3 is currently deployed to the Persian Gulf with the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group.

The Harry S. Truman Strike Group is part of a routine presence of U.S. warships to the region, and its operations are focused on demonstrating an ongoing commitment to security and stability. U.S. forces maintain a naval and air presence in the area to deter destabilizing activities, while safeguarding the region's vital links to the global economy.

CVW-3 consists of Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 11, VFA-32, VFA-37 and VFA-105; Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron 130; Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 126; and Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 7.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

To the SNA/SNFO wanabees: If this was a mishap involved serious injury or fatalities...the gallows humor would be inappropriate.

WRT naval aviation mishaps, if everyone gets out okay, learn from it, brush it off and keep flying.

When you are writing these things just remember that these 3 people have wifes, girlfriends, mothers, and children. I know humor is a good thing used in the appropriate way. We all know the risks of aviation.

Reminds me of the movie "Charlie Wilson's War" where the Mujahadeen shoot down first a Prowler/Intruder looking plane, then a Huey, and then an F-16... Funny as hell...
