And that's exactly why none of what the blow hard Chinese General has to say means anything worth worrying about.Nobody will remember this in 48 hours anyway.
Bingo.

I have believed for many years that it is time to take the gloves off the Japanese and support them militarily and politically as they move to take their place as a Pacific counterbalance to the ChiComs and NK's.
That is exactly why I am going to learn Japanese.

Sounds to me like gaijin really knows his stuff on Japan and has quite an arguement to present. Rep points for that. I'll second the fact that anything in the Formosa/Tiawan Straights is just a bad thing waiting to happen.

I'll jump on the bandwagon for rearming Japan as having them be a counter balance in the theatre. They would easily adopt the role of regional superpower considering their great wealth and incredible technology. And who knows what they already have in terms of military power and technology. Bad memory, but do remember that even India managed to pull the wool over our eyes and develop a nuclear weapons program without full CIA knowledge. I'd risk it to say the Japanese are quite a bit more clever. But I'm not implying they have ICBMs ready for use or anything like that.

As for China, from the classes I took on it, and the reading I try to keep up on, the leadership culture there really is not affected by the short term, just like A4's said. They do not feel a long term threat from us. They know we have to come all the way across an ocean and even then we've just started. More than anything they belive in the staying power of their culture. They will do whatever they can to save face, if that means tactical nukes, it would be unreasonable to discount that possibility. They have no intentions of being "shown up" by some 200+ year old, wet behind the ears, western country. A draw, and a war of attrition is enough for them to save face. So the only way we win is to invade and occupy the most populous nation on earth. We shouldn't be so quick to start thinking that way.

A few years ago, another random Chinese official publically posed the question of just what Taiwan was worth to the US. More along the lines of, "Is Taiwan worth LA, Seatle and San Diego, because that's what we'll blow up." A long history of rattling their sabers (or is it kung fu swords) at us, but I think the real questions are:

A. Would the Chinese actually push the button on us? If push came to shove, yeah I think they would, trade partner status be damned.

B. (Probably more importantly) Would a ROGUE ELEMENT of the Chinese government/military push the button on us? Hmm... Would a corrupt, ultra-nationalist Chinese general/politician with access to nukes seize an opportunity to shoot and drive China to centerstage? I wouldn't rule that possibility out, would you?

Yeah, but will we ever stop building factories over there? Nope . . . it seems useless to ask any modern CEO to worry about anything other than increasing their stock price by another quarter of a point . . .

You won't hear any argument from me. I think the US has treated China too much like a 3rd world country for too long. Probably time to consider viewing them as a viable competitor instead.

Even if they were a 3rd world country, they're way too damn big not to worry about. And I agree with you that if push came to shove they would push the button. I bet they would love to see another al Qaeda attack on us as well, would probably even help if possible.

That's the interesting part. The Chinese have no love for Muslims. They have big problems on their southwestern border with them.

A long history of rattling their sabers.....

I recall them threatening our west coast over Taiwan. My question is "when is this going to happen? What are they waiting for?"

It seems that the US is certainly content over the present arrangement with Taiwan. And of course, China isn't. My thoughts are that if they would've "rattled sabers" with us about it, they would have done so already. Anyone have any ideas as to whats holding this confrontation up?

"Saber rattling" refers to a country making threats, posturing, etc. It's not actually engaging in a fight.

What's keeping up their invasion of Taiwain? Us, for one. The other being that they have no amphibious capability that is required to invade the island... yet.

Interesting...but do you think that its possible that two parties who dont get along, but who share a "hatred" for a third party can unite if it would be in their best interest to destroy this bigger, stronger third party? I worded that like a douche but I think it makes sense.

I think they hate the Muslims more than us... I could be wrong.
