Glad the word is out about the Marine Shop. They act like they walk on water with their cushioned horse hair blah blah blah. You NEVER wear any of the higher cost uniforms anyway.

The top level cover that the PX sells is Kingform. It's leather and wicker.

Also dont rule out the Mameluke. I think they fall in somewhere between PX and The Marine Shop.

I bought a barracks cover back at TBS. Not sure why. I have never taken it out of the box.

So, this thread made me think of something that has really been pissing me off about the Marine Shop. I don't usually have a "they-are-out-to-get-me" mindset, but I think I got fvcked on purpose ...

Been pulling out all my sword stuff, Sam Browne belt, etc for sword detail for the ball. Haven't touched it since my commissioning (except for the TBS sword drill). I realized that with all of my uniforms and accessories, the Marine Shop gave me the smallest size that I could wear but tailored out to the point that I can't have any of it taken out more than maybe 1/2". Everything has been taken out to it's max. I was fitted after OCS when I was emaciated, and asked them to give me some room for when I started to get my normal shape back, lift, etc... "oh, of course, we do that for everyone." Bull shit. My jackets/trousers fit for the time being, but if I happen to change shape over the the 6 years (maybe longer, much longer) I will be buying new stuff (from the PX). Just had the pleasure of buying a new Sam Browne because the one I got was put on it's last notch when I got it. It actually still fits, but it just looks dorked up on it's last notch.

I didn't know any better when I was a green candidate ... Buck was there to take care of us after all, right? Riiiiiight ...

I sure hope I'm wrong and things just ended up that way, but I have my doubts.

I do love my garrison cover with the leather, so that helps :)

Ahh, yes. I know this problem well. I encountered it after I got to Lejuene and had to let my blues out a mere 1/2". The tailor's first question after she started prepping it to make measurements (and saw how little material there was) said "You bought from the Marine Shop, didn't you? We see this all the time from them." Very creative tailor that she was, she was able to get the 1/2". 1/4" came from the seams, and she shifted the buttons (all but the top, so it acted as a pivot point) 1/4".

Sounds like their M.O.! I was lucky enough to find a creative tailor who moved the buttons for me as well.

If anybody else has this problem, I have a Sam Browne with the opposite problem. Too big, barely fits. I'd be willing to trade straight up.

Mameluke, Mameluke, Mameluke......

The Marine Shop is a scam, and the PX tailoring sux.....I find a small down home shop like the Mameluke works for me. They care, that makes a world of difference.

The owner used to work for TMS, so the uniforms come from flying cross.....

Former Drill Instructor here, so I am picky about uniforms.....Dont go to The Marine Shop.

I've had plenty of issues with The Mameluke...

My sword has small corrosion spots on it, after being untouched for months I took it out for our sword manual and noticed the spots. Took it into the Mameluke to see if they'd seen it before and if there was anything I could do to fix it, they said they couldn't help me because I'd owned the sword for several months.

My barracks cover didn't fit, but because I no longer have the box, they wouldn't take it back.

They lost my paperwork, and denied that I'd ever been a costumer of theirs. It was only when I brought in emails I'd exchanged with the owner at the time of purchase that they'd even entertain the idea that I was a customer.

My Sam Browne was too big. At first, they told me that because it had been worn, they couldn't make an exchange...It took some convincing to get them to switch it out.

My shoes were too small. Because I wore them at commissioning, they were not returnable.

My blue trousers were missing a belt loop. I got hit on an inspection for it, so brought them into get a new loop put on. A friend went to pick them up for me (because I'm at Lejeune, now) and The Mameluke wouldn't give them to her because I hadn't paid up front for the 'alteration'. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? They fvcked up and didn't put the belt loop on, then wanted to charge me for fixing it.

The rank insignia for my cover had a massive scratch across it, so I had to buy another one. (This may have happened sometime between me buying the insignia and taking it out, but I don't think so. Can't be sure.)

After what was initially a pleasant experience with the Mameluke, working primarily with Maria, who I believe is the owner, I've had an awful time with them.

My tan shirts are too big.

MY WHITE TROUSERS SUCK. They're a cheap material, not the same as anyone else in my platoon. They don't look near as sharp - almost like a cheap khaki pants material.

PX is the way to go. Less expensive and no taxes. Interest free financing for a year if you are poor like i was at TBS. It's also very convenient to be able to walk over to the shop from the BOQ. They messed up some of the tailoring on the first try, but they fix it for free. Don't buy the jewlery box. Huge waste of money. A $5 tacklebox from walmart will accomplish the same thing. It's probably a good idea for SNAs to get two piss cutters or atleast two eagle globe and anchor emblems for it. It gets kind of beat up in the pocket of your flight suit and you'll want a descent cover for when you wear your alphas or chucks.

Okay, well it sounds like my experience has been slightly different. I got all my stuff from The Marine Shop. Fortunately, I haven't had to alter any of my uniforms so things still fit just the same. I got my sword, Sam Browne, the works from them and they were very helpful.
I was a dupe and bought the jewlery box. Yeah, a tacklebox would have worked just the same but I still use it to hold extra rank insignia, medals, wings, ribbons, etc... I've bought one other piss cover (px at Camp Pendleton) and it didn't have the leather band in it. Only reason I bought it was because I couldn't find my other one.

The Exchange maybe cheaper, The Marine Shop might be harder to work with. I can't tell the difference between my uniforms and someone from the Exchange. Guess when I finally have to get something altered I may be able to complain.
