Yep. Low tech, inexpensive, and reliable. Helps evaluate critical side slip on takeoff and landing, when visibility over the nose is reduced.

The Yaw string- arguably the most important instrument in a glider/sailplane.

You can train airspeed and altitude to a sound and sight picture. But yaw, and staying coordinated in a turn is a lot tougher.
