Concur. They had a pilot program (pun intended) for guys who were already selected and sitting in A-pool during 2000. They would conduct PRK and then track their progress. The guys that did it were all for it. It held them up from training for 6 months, but in the end, they were going to be eligible for SNA. That's what led to the existing standard that PRK is okay. There was a guy in the API class behind me that went through it.
Does anybody know where a current link is to NOMI's SNA vision requirements (diopters, refractive errors, etc. and all)? I've searched high and dry and can't find it for the life of me. Sometimes my right eye is useless, which is why I am curious about this.
I think it is safe to say if your "right eye is (sometimes) useless", you don't need specifics about eye requirements from NAMI. I can tell ya that you need both eyes to work all the time.

Before I start I have searched as much as possible, but I could not find an answer to my specific question. Long story short, last year I applied for Marine OCS and was sent to Bellechase for a flight physical. I was told after the boards I was not selected, and my OSO gave me no reason; just said we'll be in touch. Fast forward to about 2 months ago. The new OSO calls and tells me I have been selected. Apparantly the old OSO never sent my physical to be approved by NOMI. The new OSO got it approved and told me I was selected for OCC 194. Here's the catch. He told me I needed to get an updated physical, so he is sending me to Pcola in about a week. He isaid the original physical is good for 2 years for accesssions, but only 1 year for commission. Is this correct? Also, since I have already been accepted, what if my vision has deteriorated since the last physical? Would I need to apply for a waiver, and if so could it be approved and me still go to OCS in Jan? Thanks for any info you have.
If you need a waiver for vision, you will probably be bumped to OCC 195 in the summer. The FP is only good for 1yr prior to commission, so your OSO is correct.
Being accepted once does not guarantee much. After you next physical, you'll get another one when you report to P-Cola after TBS and you could still be found NPQ for flight. Doesn't happen a lot, just look at the thread NAMI WHAMMY.

I went to the eye doctor a couple of days ago just to see if my vision had changed. He told me I see 20/25. He said my astigmatism had gotten a little worse, but he said it would be their call as to exactly what it is. He said I could go either way at -1.00 to -1.25. I did read on the NOMI website that you could disregard the cyclopegic reading if the dry reading was within limits. Do I just hope for the best? Is there a waiver available for this issue? Any info you have is much appreciated!

I'm sure everyone's more than sick of seeing this thread pop back up every month but I just found some relevant info I wanted to put out. The SNA contact lens waiver is "under review" and may be changed/deleted soon. For anyone who is counting on this waiver, you might want to watch the waiver guide (http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/NAMI/WaiverGuideTopics/pdfs/Waiver Guide - Ophthalmology.pdf) and begin looking for alternatives (read PRK). Wish me luck because I have my appointment for the waiver exam tomorrow morning

Shouldn't be a problem. A deal is a deal, seriously. If they start to dick with ya, I'd like to know the details.

Alright, I am pretty confused. If I want to fly in the navy but I have worse than 20/40, what are my chances? Does that completely dq me? Would PRK allow me to become an aviator?

PRK would allow you to become an aviator if you qualify for the surgery and all goes well (which it usually does). The Contact Lense "waiver" seems to be in a state of flux and I wouldn't count on it.

You must be joking .... yes??? You come on here and ask a question that has been asked and answered 1,000 times ... ??? Are you aware of the "search" function ... ??? And, in any case .... you want medical advice from an internet board ... ??? You are willing to risk your eyes and future on what some poster has to say herein .... ??? Of course not ... silly me .... no harm, no foul .... as no one could be serious about that ....
This is such a relief for me, and hopefully, for everyone else ....
In a day and age when there are too many Aviator applicants for too few Aviator seats ... the sometimes semi-"useless" can still have their day in the sun and BE SOMEBODY in Naval Air .... we even had a S/O at the airline (a female, but I'm sure that was just coincidental ... ) who had a glass eye .... so I'm sure a "useless" eye should not be a huge obstacle ...
.... I'm "sometimes useless", too. What's next??? The deaf & dumb ... ???
