Copy or not, if it runs, looks enough like the real thing to impress your (jewelry obsessed) jet-type buddies, and it wasn't too expensive, I say great!
don't have to be a jet guy to like nice things. what other kind of jewelry is a man gonna wear?

Well I just thought I'd add my 2 cents into this conversation. I'm a long time reader but first time poster so take my advice as you will......As far as which is better, it's totally a matter of opinion.....Sorry for the long post, but I thought I'd add my perspective to the issue.

Good stuff ... feel free to "long post" anytime ... now aren't you glad you're "out of the closet" ... or jewelry store, in this case ??? And you're right --- re: watches --- it's all personal preference.

It's funny what motivates guys to come out --and on -- the board & offer an opinion after "lurking" in the weeds for a while. In this case ... like most of the others ... you found something you wanted to say and you know what you're talking about .... :)

A belated welcome aboard.

Are you sure it's real and not a copy? Hong Kong is famous for forgeries...

It came with all the papers and boxes etc, and the bootlegs they sell there are usually the Rolex's, Omega's, Breitlings, haven't seen a good bootlegged chopard yet. Also, cheaper in HK is only a few hundred dollars cheaper than it would be here, not $100 for a $2000 watch. The big fancy stores there are good to go, its buying off the street i'd advise against.

You are very correct. I'm not saying that it's not good to have a nice looking watch. I'm just wondering why you'd drop that much cash for it. A4s compared it to a Yugo v. a Porsche or a Cadillac. I don't think so. Quality and performance wise, the Yugo is far behind. I realize that more expensive time pieces will give you better accuracy, but my previously mentioned $10.95 Casio has lost a total of 2 minutes in the 3 years since I bought it and set it to match the atomic clock. That's a lot of cash to fork out.

Why ... I guess it's because I can .... ???:)

I can't take the cash with me .... (although I am working on a program to allow me to do that) .... but I CAN take the watch "with me" ... in fact, I almost did on a couple of occasions. You CAN ALWAYS GET MORE MONEY ... you get more every month .....

.....but a trusted friend??? They are harder to come by. Even if "he" did come from Switzerland ??? ;)

in the end it has very little to do with functionality and accuracy (for me at least). yeah, both tell time. yeah, the helo has a clock. but a nice watch is a nice watch. something to be said for the style of it. the yugo may get you from point a to point b, but it looks, sounds, and proably smells like shit doing it. the porsche looks awesome and is a pleasure to drive. i also like the idea that it will be around for awhile and it is something i could pass on to my kids. the kind of watch someone might keep up their ass for 7yrs to make sure your kid gets it. i doubt anyone would do that with a casio. plus, what else are you gonna spend your money on? especailly when you got all the other bases covered and you're raking in beau coup per diem and special pays for the enxt couple of months.

Because it will give you enjoyment for a looooong time. Also, the idea that elves in tyrolean hats have slaved away in the Alps making your timepiece is an equally valid reason.;)

For a quick tutorial on the differences of luxury timepieces:
http://www.chronocentric.com/watches/brands.shtml

Also, the main thrust of my earlier post was that their are many other great brands of watches for pilots, above the basic Timex or Casio, and other than Rolex that are not "Eurotrash". I shouldn't have wasted time with the very valid brand loyalty that A4s feels for his well-made chunks o'steel. :)

For the younger crowd, do some research...check out Timezone.com, Watchuseek.com, and Chronocentric.com for information on the vast number/types of timepieces out there. Spend that ACIP ferchrissakes!

A fine timepiece is a very personal investment. It is one that will at least last a lifetime, if not on to the next generation.

My Rolex, acquired as a Ltjg., still serves me incredibly well even after decades of demanding, everyday service. Its substantial initial price – amortized over many years – by now is reduced to the ridiculous. Nevertheless, although well used, its actual high value today is absolutely incredible. And its extraordinary monetary value is only exceeded by its sentimental value.

Best purchase I ever made!
[except maybe for San Diego real estate, and Qualcomm stock in the '90's. :icon_tong ]

I think I'll stick with just forking over the cash to buy a new one for the kid.....

with your best christopher walken impression: "The way your dad looked at it, this watch was your birthright. He'd be damned if any of the slopes were gonna get their greasy yellow hands on his boy's birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide something: his ass. Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then when he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable piece of metal up my ass for two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you. "
