What is Everyone's Final Goal?

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering, do many of you want to make the Navy as a career (20+ years of service), or are there some of you looking to make it mainly an experience for 4 or 8 years and then move on to something else.

I am 25, turning 26 in a month, and I am looking to be a Naval Intel Officer mainly for just more experience before maybe going on to further schooling or who knows, maybe staying in the Navy. I was just wondering if there was anyone else out there like myself?

Also, for those that have been at OCS, how old are many of the people there? Because to be honest, I do feel a little old to be going in right now, but another part tells me not to care about age.

Thanks everyone!

If I get final select (fingers crossed), I will be 22 when I head to OCS.

Right now my gameplan is to do my training, 8 years of service, and then move on to the civilian world. I'd love to fly for an airline after the Navy if I end up flying planes while in the service.

I was commissioned a month before my 27th bday. You will will be older than most of your cohorts (unless of course they are prior enlisted). I want to stay 20 and retire. The benefits are good, I like what I do, and the civilian world isn't all that (I spent 5 years in a "career" before I joined).

There will be people in their mid 30s going through with you. ;) Not to fret. I'm staying in until they boot me out. That will be 38 years by statute, unless I make Captain. :D

I'll be 23 if/when I go to Marine OCS. I want to fly and I am considering career, but I don't need to decide yet, so that's up in the air.

I think people are overreacting and if this is in fact the case it is temporary

I'm 32, just got out (one week ago today) after a tad over 13 years active duty service. My "goals" changed dramatically after my daughter was born 11 months ago (today). Unlike before she was born, my goals now are more centered around what will benefit her the most, not me and my wife.

What does everyone think about the "no air contracts" for the Marine Corps?
I think it's great, if you saw the back up that an influx of Air Contracts has caused during the wait for API, Primary, Advanced, you'd think it was great too. The governments paying 0-1 pay for people to do nothing for 6 months, and it's about time CNATRA and whoever else does this stuff realized there is a way to fix the problem, it just sucks for the people applying that have to wait, but look at it this way, better you than me.

Your still young, I'm in my mid 30's, not at all worried about the age factor. Becoming a Naval Officer will only broaden my horizons and allow me to accomplish things I'd otherwise be unable to do in my civilian career.

I'm with Lewie on that...

Commissioned at 22, plan on staying in till they give me the boot. Married with a kid on the way, so when the time comes where I have to make the stay in or get out decision, its whats best for the fam... not what Bubba wants.
