What is “misinterpreting the grades you’re giving out?” I’ll take “Ways To Hose Up Your Students’ NSSes” for $500, Alex.
There is no “average” in the “new” system (that’s been around for 15 years). There’s “the minimum score you have to meet by checkpoints in the syllabus.” And, as always, if you just meet the minimum, you’ve got little room for error.

Good students generally got good grades and bad ones bad,
Some IPs graded by the book, some didn't make the effort to go by the book, and others bent the rulebook a bit.
Both systems could be used, misused, or manipulated by the chain of command to handle the truly bad students to attrite them, give them another chance, or to pass them along as the leadership saw fit.
This is what really drove my "Triggered" meme. People who didn't put the effort in to learn the training standards frustrated me. If you (rhetorical you) graded the way you graded for everyone, fine, but at least understand what the one grade that's defined incredibly well means (ie, CTS). Having graded under both systems, and finishing up with the BA/A/AA system, I've grown to really appreciate what MPTS brought to the table for both IP and stud, assuming the IP had an open mind to learn it.
Or just completely disregarded so that an IP could get to the CCX destination bar as early as possible. Training was just a nice to have, should it have fit into the schedule.
