Age also is a factor actually. Each year you get older your max decreases unless you on a great regimen. I'm 29 and not Lance Armstrong so if I hit 200 I'd end up in an ambulance.
You would be surprised how old elite runners are when they hit their stride, well long distance....

No doubt, a have a buddy who is into ultras so some of his proselytizing and my own reading convinced me distance is the way to go on cardio.

The guy never does stuff shorter than 10k and I challenged him to just push it on a 5k - he ran 20 min on trail and was conversational at the end as if it was a warm up.
