The Great Growler Gallery

when do you suppose they will start the training for personnel in the growler? and will they go through the same training that a fighter would go through since it is a f-18 with the capability of air to air?

Another question does this support the statement that your chances of going to f-18 is almost certain if you go jets? because they are about to scrap the s-3 correct, and replace the prowler with the growler, so the only jet left would be the f-18???? f-18 will do the refueling and helo's will take over anti sub duty.

what do you guys know about this and what are the odds of classes increasing the need for jet pilots and it making the odds better for someone going to flight school?

Why worry about something that far off? Last I hear, 45-50% of all Navy pilots are helo pilots, thus the probablity is you will fly helo's. If I were you, worry about step one...getting picked up for officer; step two...getting selected for a pilot slot; step three..making it through API/primary; step four..selecting tailhook; step 5..not selecting E2/C2 while in Kingsville/Meridian; Step 6...earning your wings. You have a lot steps before worrying about the Growler.

Kind of like the Hornet was a "quantum leap" over the A-6/A-7? Oh, except for the fact that it had shorter legs, wasn't any faster with a load, and had a (significantly) lower bring-back?

Hope I'm wrong, but my faith in the system is waning...

I just can't believe they decided to use an A-6 for some of those missions. Or an A-4. I mean, those stupid jet engines only alow like 2.2 of flight time! What the hell. In the P-51 days, before that big step backward that was and is the "jet age" we could really get stuff done.

A 300 Extra can turn on a dime. 9+G at those low airspeeds? Talk abotu a gun-fighter! Thats where aviation should be going, not toward whiz-bang SA Radar and complicated link systems, or accurate bombing with improved CAS capability...

:)

The Growler is pretty slick. It is a new system. It has more capability than even the ICAP III. I will never end up flying it, I am well aware, but the system is better, and a much needed improvement for the EW threats we actually need to worry about in a large scale air war. Nuff said there. You can probably google all kinds of things about it, and some of the Jx systems.

It claims to have similiar range and loiter numbers as a B (prowler), which I am not too sure I actually buy into, but the capability PURELY from a EW perspective is worth it. Not to mention the jack of all trades-ness the '18 platform brings, and has slated for future blocks.

Pure and simple: it can do new, neat stuff.

Although after my little time on the island, my eyes are already bleeding from .ppt on the subject...

Probably deployed. 132 will be taking theirs to Japan and relieving 136 at some point. Some jets are always in depot-level maintenance too. Does seem to be a major mismatch. Maybe the reporter goofed.

132 is no longer going to CAG 5, it will be 141 after it does its first Growler cruise on the Bush w/ CAG 8.

The Prowler unit at NAS Andrews (or whatever it's called there in D.C.) is supposed to get a few (maybe 6 jets??)

VAQ-209 will not be getting any Growlers and will disestablish when the Navy gets out of Prowlers in 2013.

Relieving the Gauntlets as in 136 is becoming a CONUS squadron or Deactivation?
