Roger Ball, good and not-so-good questions about the world of "Paddles"

.... "2XX, 3/4 of a mile, call the ball," .... "Roger, ball,"..... (followed by a "quite correct" appreciation of what goes down on the windswept PLATFORM) ... I'm just a Hawkeye window-licker, after all)...
Mebbe so, you steeeeeenkin' window washer-licker .... but you can come out on the PLATFORM & write book for me anyday ... :D

You meant Cut lights. Waveoff lights mean.........try again.

I can't believe A4s let that one get by.......

You're slipping, sir.:D
I said I'd let him "write book" .... NOT touch the Pickle. :D

Mebbe I'd let him take it back to his stateroom after the recoveries were all done.

MOVLAS Station 3??

Any of our Carrier Aviators on AW ever done a MOVLAS Station 3 recovery (RHS of LA)? I know on the Prowler (or A-6) it would be very uncomfortable and I have never experienced one....

Do you mean w/ the MOVLAS light box set up starboard side, aft of the island ... ??? If so, no ... :) That would be tough in any aircraft, let alone side-by-side seated aircraft.

Like this -- see where the MOVLAS/portable lens/light is?? This guy was looking across the cockpit for the BALL (contrary to all instinctive BALL flying and training) and obviously got a HUGE "LEFT for LINE-UP!!" call -- and late, too:

Yep... that's the one.

Clara Ball?

So a strange question from a helo guy but since my community is going to be carrier based ,and the question came up, I figured I would go to the experts. During my DLQ sim when going to the carrier my instructor asked if I knew the origination of the word "clara" when calling no joy. I hadnt a clue being fairly new to this and my classmate, a former S-3 NFO, wasnt sure either. So i put it to the experts? Anyone? ...........Discuss amongst yourselves.

Clara is short for 'clarify'--as in "clarify if I'm high/low/whatever". At least that's what I remember them telling us.

That COULD be ... but I've never heard that and as a result, I doubt it ... why would one just not say "clarify"??? Suffice it to say that "CLARA" is a real bitch. :icon_wink

But I do know that as late as @ calendar year 2000, the Naval History Center AND Naval Aviation News was soliciting input from anyone who knew the origin of the LSO-Carrier Aviator term "CLARA" ... meaning "BALL NOT IN SIGHT" ....

I.e., if YOU know -- call 'em at 202-433-4407 or email 'em at nanews@nhc.navy.mil ....

It's kinda like:

Question: "Why DO sailors like their rum, Capt Ron ... "??

Answer: "Nobody knows .... "
:D

Tell Pete I said hi! CLARA=Clarify my position as you could be CLARA low/high or something blocking the lens. Bottom line is you do not know where you are on glideslope and the LSO needs to know that to talk you aboard.
