Just took the ASTB and didn’t do so good. Got a 50 5/6/5.

I know math was definitely my weakest point. Questions did not get hard and I remember the last question was something like “if a car for sale is $30,000 and a discount of 20% is applied then another discount of 25% is applied, what is the discounted price of the car.” Obviously not that difficult of a math problem and this was a hint that I probably bombed the math portion.

For aviation and nautical questions, it asked me about 10 questions and kicked me out. The questions were extremely basic and I’m confident I answered them all correctly but who knows if I really did because they seemed to not get any harder.

UAV portion really threw me off. In the ASTB app, I can answer every UAV question correctly and with an average time of about 1.2 seconds. This was not the case on the test, every time I clicked an answer, it would say I had a reaction speed of about 2 or 3 seconds. I also got like 4 wrong. Halfway through the UAV questions, I figured out that you should not wait and listen to the voice and should rather just read the tiny text at the bottom of the map telling you which direction to focus on. I was really nervous throughout the whole test so might be my nerves that affected my performance unfortunately.

I felt like I did really well on the joystick and throttle tracking. It seemed like for both targets, I had green crosshairs most of the time. I might have gotten a couple wrong on the dichotic listening but I’m not sure. Emergency procedures felt pretty easy and I was able to solve them within a couple of seconds.

Despite my confidence on most of the PBM section, I still only scored a 5/6/5. Very disappointed but it’s only my first try.

With all that said, it seems like math plays a huge role on all of the scores. Math and UAV are the two sections I screwed up on and it seems to have a really huge impact.

I just don’t understand how I could suck at the math portion but still score a 50 oar? Maybe I just did really good on reading and mechanical?

Going to retake the ASTB, but I’ve got one question. My recruiter said I can retake the ASTB part and I don’t have to retake the OAR. Does anyone know if this is true?

I mean the OAR does factor in to each of the sun scores according to what has been posted on here. OAR also is just a ticket to the board from what I’ve seen obviously you don’t want the minimum but 50 or above is considered good

Yeah my recruiter was happy about the 50. Though I’m only interested in aviation.

If OAR does really have a huge impact, definitely going to retake it in order to do better on math.

1. It is concerning he doesn't know the retest policy, is he really an Officer Recruiter? If not I might give him a pass.
2. Here is a snip from the site with the policy as well as the link to the site. https://www.med.navy.mil/Navy-Medic...stitute/Department-53-Operational-Psychology/

I'm new here. Currently enlisted E-4, applying for pilot designator, taking ASTB in a week. Been studying with Barron's and Aegis group study guides. However since it doesn't have PBM portion, is there a way for me to practice for it ? I know it involves joystick and headset, and I've seen @faithbyfligh video, besides that, are there any links or somehow I can be a bit prepared for it ? Anything is helpful. Thanks in advance

Yeah the ASTB app is the best for the UAV portion of the PBM (shoulder board icon on app store). For the time on target practice the Jantzen sim which was created by a guy on here is exactly like the real thing, you can order a logitech x-52 hotas on amazon to use the sim. Not sure what mapping to use on PC but for Mac its "joystick mapper" on the app store. For the academic portion "Kyle's Drive" is great, just look that up through the search function and you should be squared away!

Does Jantzen's support throttle and stick? Going to order the X52 if so.
Did you ever figure out how to connect a throttle and stick set up? I have the X52 but having problems with my HP that won't recognize USB ports. So ordered a different one to set up with Xbox and hoping to practice Jantzen's on there.

Are you using AntiMicro? If not, it’s an application that allows your you to use the joystick. It basically tells your computer that the joystick movements are keyboard/mouse inputs. Without AntiMicro, your PC probably wont recognize the joystick. Setting up AntiMicro is pretty intuitive and there are plenty of youtube videos.

It's an ongoing problem I've had with my PC lately, independent of the joystick. But disregard, just went out and bought an adapter to plug into my Mac so we'll see if I can get it to work now. Thanks for the reply!

@averagebrownie8 @jacobserrioz So I have the X52 plugged into my Mac and have mapped out the settings with JoyStick Mapper but it still isn't transferring over to Jantzen's sim (I'm on Chrome, not Safari) - does anyone have any suggestions? I can't find said write-ups on how to configure it. And yes I have searched Google, Youtube and this forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Download firefox, and then access it through there. Also, make sure you click the box next to the preset you want to use.

Do I have to buy the joystick and throttle set up ? I'm guessing it would greatly help out, but is it like a must before I take the test , or I could prepare and still do good somehow without joystick practice ? Any advice is helpful, thanks.

The joystick and throttle are a big game changer. If you really don't want to buy it you can just play games that use inverted controls like battlefield. Good thing about the joystick and throttle is that you can use it for other things once you ace your ASTB, or just sell it!
