Does anyone have any other tricks besides the pencil method or can someone explain that method better for the terrain identification portion?

Have you ever considered creating a desktop application version of the ASTB prep app? Something that could compete with the TBAS prep software and be compatible with a HOTAS?

I think that would be a pretty useful piece of software.
Funny enough, I'm picking up an X52 controller today, I'm sure you can figure out what I intend to use it for. However, I don't know if I can actually do what I intend to with it, but I will keep you guys informed on my progress.

Hey guys, does anyone have any tips or tricks for the new Terrain Identification section of the ASTB? I have the ASTB app, and it does a good job with practice questions, however I am not understanding it. Could anyone share their strategies for it? Thanks.

I just took the ASTB on Monday and scored 9/9/8, there's a very simple trick you can do with a pencil for this section. (1) Use a pencil to find a straight up and down fix on the right screen to find your course line. Then, (2) just find that same fix on the left map and the direction your pencil is facing is the correct direction. It may not be perfect, but you can also use close to vertical lines and use slight right and left turns to make it match up. I included some photos as well because I probably explained it like shit. The correct answer of the bottom one is East. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I've seen on forums here discussing to learn and memorize the Emergency Procedures when it comes down to taking the test, but what procedures exactly? Engine failure? Two-way communication failure? everything?

This a great question. I thought that the ASTB gives you the emergency procedures before the test section and people can write it down, but I have seen conflicting comments. Can anyone chime in about this?

They give you the procedures before the test section, you have plenty of time to memorize it or write it down on paper.

Thanks! I have printed out a 12 point compass that I’ve been using with the app. Are you allowed to use your own compass on the actual test like you are with the UAV?

Obligatory post-ASTB comment.

Retook the ASTB today. Pulled my score from a 5/6/6 to a 7/8/7. Not the best score and a little disappointed in myself but hey, it's a higher and we take those.

Not much new to contribute to the pool of resources. I'll hammer in a few things here:

Math: Honestly thought I bombed this section hard, but apparently I didn't do too bad. That being said, practice practice practice. Basic stuff like remembering rules of decimal multiplication, exponents, and simplifying equations can save you. I downloaded an app (IOS) called simply "Learn Math." Awesome for on-the-go practice. Simple explanations and a seemingly never-ending supply of practice questions with adjustable difficulty. 10/10 highly recommend.

Mech: Didn't study for this section honestly. Probably didn't do amazing on it. Not the guy you wanna ask about it.

Reading: Nothing to add, I can't read (half joking).

ANIT: Man. I was surprised by the questions I got on this section. Questions ranged from "What do the rudders control?" to "How much fuel should you dump if you are 80lbs overweight" and some question about the specific general quarter a certain Navy rate is expected to man on a carrier and for what situation. No idea. Study the PHAK, these flashcards, Kyle's Drive, and Gomez's Drive. I also drew some neat pictures to help with some aviation history stuff. Ended up not getting asked about history at all, but I know a lot of people get them so I'll drop em below.

UAV: I didn't use the paper trick. I'm not actually sure what the paper trick is to be honest. I just practiced the hell out of the section with the ASTB app (solid ass app, btw). I missed one answer cause I had a brain shart. It happens.

PBM: I bought the x52 stick and throttle. Used it with this sim specifically. 10/10. Made the actual test feel like nothin. Crank the difficulty to max and practice.
Also, my EPs were different this time from my last. Something to keep in mind. They seem to change.

Directional Orientation: I used a pencil to mark "North" on the active map (the map on the right). I then chose the direction that matched up. I think it worked pretty good but I very well might've missed a few. Again, use the ASTB app for this one.

Words of encouragement:
Look y'all I won't lie. I am not a smart man. I scored pretty low on IQ tests (won't say how low lol) and damn near failed out of high school. No exaggeration. I was able to pull off (mediocre but better) scores during finals here at my university. Was incredibly hard, but I did it. I am a firm believer that you can do whatever you want by controlling what is within your control. Study study study. Give up a bit of free time. Take a cut in drinking or hanging out with friends to study. Make that sacrifice and spend a full day on the weekend studying. Just don't burn yourself out. If you do it right it'll pay off.

If I can do it, damn near anyone can.
