How were you scoring on the dichotic listening when you were using the ASTB prep app?
I would just play the game on there and use the buttons on the screen. Then I would do it again with the audio only and lay down and practice listening for the right cues.

Hello All,
I've been having a hard time finding material/practice for the reading section of the ASTB. I've taken the test twice now so I have a good idea of the material but I struggled hard to move through this section. If anyone has some kind of resources that they found helpful for the reading section (outside of the ASTB App, and the google drives) please let me know. Thank you and good luck to you all

I had another question about the math sections. I'm not 100% sure if these were the exact values but I struggled with a question that was formatted like this one. (assuming X is a square) unnamed.jpgAnyone know the answer and the math behind it- I would greatly appreciate the help!

Seems like the quickest way is to recognize that the triangle is a 30-60-90 triangle and that the hypotenuse is 2x if the shorter leg is x (look up a 30-60-90 triangle on google images)

If we find x (which is 13/2 = 6.5), then we've found one of the sides of the square.

We just square it and get 42.25.

Another way of doing it is the trigonometric ratios SOH CAH TOA. We just use SOH to set up: sin(30) = OPP/HYP and rearranging it equals OPP = sin(30) x HYP which equals 6.5.

Say you don't remember the ratios of the 30-60-90 triangle or that sin(30) = 1/2; another option would be to make a full triangle out of the right triangle, so you'll get an equilateral triangle where all angles are the same degrees (60 degrees). Then, all sides of that equilateral triangle will be 13. Then, we cut down that equilateral triangle to get the right triangle we started with. And we'll end up with 13/2 = 6.5 for the length of one side of the square (then we do 6.5 x 6.5 = 42.25).

Let me know if you're having trouble visualizing this; I'll see if I can draw something up if you need it.

Check me on my reasoning and arithmetic; I may have made a typo somewhere, but the reasoning should be sound.

Outstanding, that helps a ton. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain it.

Took my final ASTB in the beginning of my fall of junior year. My first score being a 6/5/5 during the beginning of my sophomore spring after studying for about 2 and a half weeks then my second/final score was a 9/8/8. Below I have attached a document which includes my process, study materials I used, and tips to help guide those who are trying to get a good score on their ASTB. I hope it helps! Feel free to contact me for any additional questions.

I take my second ASTB on December 20th, do you feel math may be included in the first number of the score? It’s just something I’ve heard. I also noticed you went from 6 to 9 on it which is impressive. I’d like to get the same scores as you.

I will also read through what you linked, thank you for that.

The first number is your AQR score which includes math. If you have any questions about getting a higher score after looking through the document let me know, Ill be happy to answer. I prefer email though which is attached in the document.

Is getting a tutor for the OAR and ASTB useful?
It really depends on how disciplined you are with how you study and identifying your strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, it depends on how long it’s been since you graduated college and took a formal math and science class.
The gouge here is sufficient and it just needs to be supplemented with other resources. Depending on your learning style, YouTube is the best at breaking down the topics you don’t understand.
When I took the ASTB the first time, I didn’t have much structure in my studying and I did not adequately prepare. To my surprise, I did not do well. This time around I just organized the way I studied and honed in on the topics that were difficult until I mastered it.
I take the ASTB again in a few weeks and I plan to do better this time around.

If it’s your first time taking it, do not think it’s ,“not going to be as bad,”(don’t be like me). The exam adapts to your abilities and determines if you barely meet, meet, or exceeds the threshold it has set.

If you feel like you need a more structured learning environment then tutoring is the way to go! I just printed out a calendar and wrote down what I was going to hit on for the day.
