Congratulations on the score.

How is the ASTB math for beginners book?
I found it helpful, it’s not hard at all but it definitely has everything necessary. I did a chapter a day from it since I had a few weeks. Kept me very sharp on math, and it may seem silly but I found myself at work or other places doing simple or somewhat complex math in my head very fast. Just good practice, anyway it’s $15 and i recommend it if you can spare the change.

So I got a 43 5/7/6 on the test.

Math felt alright. Wasn't as complex and the material I studied for. For the most part I believe I knew what was presented. I think the section eventually ended before I finished 30 questions?? I'm not sure.

Reading was pretty straightforward, however I wasn't able to finish on time.

Mechanical was probably the section I knew the least on the test. It was a bit different than what I studied for. I wasn't able to finish on time as well.

ANIT wise, I was surprised. I believe I studied the least amount for this section but fortunately, 90% or more of the questions I knew. Felt confident after finishing them.

PMB wise, was a breeze tbh. I was most confident with this. I think I got UAV all correct and hopefully the terrain portion. The stick and throttle portion also went well. Obviously I can't say whether I got all them correct but I didn't have a hard time tracking the targets, plus with the listening and emergency procedures.

I won't lie, I was a bit surprised by my scores. Everything from the ANIT onwards (PMB) was very easy for me.

I'm guessing not finishing the reading and mechanical section/the mechanical being my weaker section, were a decent portion of my over all score. As far as I'm aware, the math reading and mechanical section affects the OAR, hence the low score, however I don't know if it affects any other section of the ASTB. If not then, I'm not sure how much more I can improve the PFAR and FOFAR: assuming if those two sections are PMB heavy.

Nonetheless, I hope to take it again. I hope I'm know what to focus a bit more on and hopefully I'll do better.
Your oar, particularly math, has a pretty big impact on your aqr

Hello all,
I took my ASTB for the first time on Thursday I got a 49 5/6/5. I'm not super pleased with it based on everyone else's amazing scores here. So I will test again in the next month and a half. Any advice on raising this would be great. I used Barron's which I found the reading material helpful, but the practice test a bit too easy. I also purchased the app and it's amazing. My main challenge is that I'm an active-duty soldier and father of two, so my day keeps me busy. My one goal is to get picked up for SNA.

I definitely understand the busy part; it's not always easy to get in and adequate amount of studying/practice but we'll make it work.

If you check on the link above, it'll take you to a post I made a few days ago about some links that will allow you to access more study material for the ASTB. Plus I'm sure there are other materials in the forum as well; but I believe I covered the majority of them in my post (in the link I posted above.)

I'm also shooting for SNA. I scored 43 5/7/6 my first try; so with a little bit more focus on the areas I didn't do so well on the test, God willing, I'll be able to bump up my scores. And for you, 5/6/5 is not too far off from getting all 7's for immediate select, for SNA. If you managed to do so while being active duty and being a dad on top of it all, a little more studying will definitely get you the 7s you need. I'd recommend studying whenever you can. I'd shot for 2 hours and least 5 times a day, especially on the areas that you know you struggled on after your first attempt on the ASTB. And if possible, study more on the weekend. Take breaks when necessary as well. Lastly, make sure not to neglect brushing up on the areas you did well on the test. The last thing you want is to show up to your second attempt and you do poorly on the areas you did well the first time around. I hope this helps. Lmk if the links don't work.

I'd also like to add, that from what others have said, Barron's math material is easy compared to the actual test. So perhaps, focus your study material on the links that I mentioned in my post or something else that is similar to the exam. If anything, focus on logarithms and probabilities, and the occasional geometry in general.

Assuming you’re 34 I would double check to see if an age waiver can be entertained for you.

Age cut off is 32 and it appears BDCP option is the only thing open at the moment.

Asking the navy to waive almost 2 years is a big ask.

Don’t compare yourself to others too much. Each of us come from different backgrounds and some are fresh out of school while others are a bit older. Start from page 600 in this thread and read through it.

Math has the biggest influence on your OAR and AQR. YouTube grammar hero and organic chem tutor. Watch ALL of grammar hero’s videos and Org for the harder topics and to challenge yourself.

PBM practice as much as you can on the sim. It was probably the best investment I made. For UAV, aim to not miss any on the real exam. Practice with the app everyday.

I probably had the worst scores 3/3/3 and in 45 days I pulled it up to 7/8/8. It is possible. Just put the work in and you will do well. You got it your next go!
If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

I am also active so I can somewhat sympathize, my first score was a 46 4,5,5. But, you can definitely get it up next time, you already have the advantage of seeing the test once. What I did was, I wrote down what I felt I did bad on, then what I did good on. I studied hard for 3 weeks every day on what I did bad on. Then just brushed up on what I did good on, for example I bought the ASTB math for beginners book and did that every day, when I ran out of that I printed off worksheets from the google drives and did those too. Then since I felt confident on everything else, I’d just go through ANIT and Mech flash cards a bit a day. Finally for sims I did 2 UAV, 2 Terrain, and 1 stick and throttle before bed. My last score was a 52 7,9,8.

I really appreciate you taking time and replying, that score jump is very inspirational. Hope you reach your goal. I’ll look up those YouTube videos you recommended. And already working on getting controller to do sim practice. Thank you!
