1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

I am also active so I can somewhat sympathize, my first score was a 46 4,5,5. But, you can definitely get it up next time, you already have the advantage of seeing the test once. What I did was, I wrote down what I felt I did bad on, then what I did good on. I studied hard for 3 weeks every day on what I did bad on. Then just brushed up on what I did good on, for example I bought the ASTB math for beginners book and did that every day, when I ran out of that I printed off worksheets from the google drives and did those too. Then since I felt confident on everything else, I’d just go through ANIT and Mech flash cards a bit a day. Finally for sims I did 2 UAV, 2 Terrain, and 1 stick and throttle before bed. My last score was a 52 7,9,8.
Sup JFinley,

Trying this strat out. We are the same ball park in first attempt scores as mine was 5/5/5. My 2nd retest is for 1/22/25 and I'm planning on studying like hell over winter break for this. If anyone wants to add onto this, that would be great to keep that positive feedback loop going.

Hello, I'd like some feedback on my Navy OCS application stats for:
  1. Fighter Pilot
  2. NFO
  3. Supply Corp
  4. SWO

    Here are my stats

Age: 23
ASTB: 4/7/6
AOR: 49
Degree: Liberal Studies with a concentration in Industrial Design (took College Alg, College Calculus, Data Science) --I was industrial engineering spring 2020 then switched out due covid affected circumstances.
GPA: 2.5 (will request waiver)
Work experience: Asst manager Sherwin Williams (2022-Current)
Recommendations: Job manager recommendation and University academic advisor recommendation

I will graduate with a B.A. in Liberal Studies in Spring 2025. So not much to do with GPA. I would like to know if i should apply when board review timeframe opens up OR wait until after graduate from college? GPA will not increase much from there even if ALL A grades obtained and no extra year will be taken b/c college is expensive. It seems like the FY25 quotas are full. So board reviews for FY26 will begin in March/April 2025 for the community designations listed above. Also, do i schedule officer interviews or does my recruiter do that? Any help is greatly appreciated.

First off, use the search function. A lot of your exact questions have been answered previously. I do not know much about the application process for supply or SWO, so my advice for you will be based on applying for SNA/SNFO. Second, 'fighter pilot' is not a designator, you will apply to become a pilot and then get assigned an airframe by the Navy based on your performance in flight school.

Your major of study, work experience, and recommendations will not matter. For SNA's & NFO's, the Navy only cares about your GPA and ASTB scores. I say this with all due respect but with a 2.5 you are already well under what would be considered competitive. Your ASTB is *alright*. A 7 PFAR and 6 FOFAR is definitely enough to get you selected if you had a high GPA, but with a 2.5 it will be a struggle. A 4 AQR is very low and diminishes your application further.

Like you said, even IF you got all A's in your last semester it would not boost your GPA in a significant way. If I were in your shoes, I would study my ass off to increase my ASTB scores. It still won't be a guarantee because of your low GPA, but if you were able to get at least an 8 PFAR and 7 FOFAR while also increasing your AQR, your chances of getting picked up for either designator go up. Good luck.

Understood. Thank you. 👍

Hi, apologies if this is the wrong thread. I am assuming this is a "what are my chances thread"?

For: SNA for the Navy. I'm also submitting one for the Marines.

ASTB: 55 5/7/6
GPA: 3.0
150 flight hours on my PPL with Instrument rating.

Marines PFT: 261

Again, apologies if this is the wrong place to ask.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've seen in this forum, the Marines are pretty chill when it comes to ASTB scores, compared to the Navy. I think they will mostly want high PFT scores. So as long as you have a farily high PFT scores, I think you should be well to submit.

P.S. Check with someone else about what I've said. I don't know much about the Marine side of things.

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate it a bunch. Would you say there's a good chance of a board selection?

Have a wonderful rest of your year!

Yessir no worries. For the Navy side, they mostly care about GPA and your ASTB score, at least for SNA and NFO. The 5 for your AQR would be considered average, I assume. However, the 7 PFAR and the 6 FOFAR are pretty good scores. I would assume that the Marines way of doing things wouldn't be too far of with the Navy but please make sure to check with someone who knows more about this. Idk if the Marines do immediate select, but you would need 7/7/7 to be immediately selected for the Navy (plus having no waviers). So lets say for example, you go the navy route with these scores, I think you would have a fair shot at SNA and NFO, perhaps not great but good enough (at least depending on their needs for that particular year). Again, this would be my assumption if you went through the Navy. If your PFT scores for the Marine are good, then I would think that you would do well with the Marine board selection, especially considering that they are not too strict when it comes to GPA and ASTB scores, but they mostly like good PFT scores.

I hope this helps; have a great rest of your year as well.

This is "true", to an extent. Yes, the Marines will give you a shot even with the minimum ASTB scores and they care less about GPA. However, the higher your ASTB the better. I had a 7/8/8 54, a 2.8 GPA, and 281 PFT score, and I was selected over people who had higher GPAs and PFTs but lower ASTB scores.

Would you say my flight hours and license would give me an advantage? I'm debating whether to risk retaking the ASTB or not. My Navy recruiter says I should be fine because the pilot license helps, but I'm open to second opinions.

This is my last question. Thank you all for the assistance.

I can tell you almost definitively that the Marines don't give a fig about prior flight experience, I have no idea about the navy.

The Navy does not either. I've heard from those with prior flight experience that when they get to pensacola the Navy has to help them unlearn civilian flying habits.
