Not a lawyer…but which part is not legal?

Can’t say I’m too opposed to taking a donation or gift of a jet for official government use.

Now…the donation to the Presidential library afterwards? I don’t see the point of that one. If anything seem
I guess that you'd have to believe that Qatar is just some altruistic benefactor of the US govt, while ignoring any Trump Org real estate deals being worked right now with Qatar. And, his AG who was making pretty good bank as a registered agent of Qatar as her last job, saying sure all looks good.

The only body who can hold this shit to account is Congress...and we know how that will turn out with all those principled leaders up there.

The scale/scope of the corruption is astonishing. His crypto business is probably worse TBH.

Lol. Wasn’t aware of all the private/backdoor dealing stuff but I guess that’s a given.

It was the proposal for the transfer of the asset to the Presidential library afterwards that jumped out most to me though. Like I have no idea how that’s at all defensible, and why it’s at all even necessary to bring up now.

The gift of the jet for official use I figured could maybe be justified as in the best interests of the taxpayer or something (free 747).

Yeah seems totally reasonable to convert this airplane sometime in the next 24-36 months, and then immediately remove it from service to go to his library. "I'm taking my ball and going home". What a fucking joke. All will be taxpayer money funded. Why replace the current AF1, flying for 35 years or so, with an airplane that can serve for more than a few months? Nah, that would be waste. The "demoncrats can buy their own AF1" Good thing we found the real waste in the federal government and fired it without cause.

I'm totally ignorant of this shit, but it's prob hard to take a basic 747-8 and rewire it and have it bristling with all the comm/defensive shit, right? My uninformed opinion would be it would not occur in his term, but like you said, best case scenario is a few months-to a year? Totally ridiculous. He seems to listen to that crackpot Loomer, so maybe he shuts it down, I dunno.

He does have a hard-on for changing the AF1 paint scheme...which is what I want my POTUS focused on. 🤷‍♂️

I don't know for an AF1 level, but I have worked on several 747 VVIP configurations and going from a shell to fully configured; typical timelines was 24 to 36 month and that was just to make boardrooms, bedrooms, offices. With SNC doing the work I would say easily x2 on that estimate for military use.

A couple of things can all be true at the same time:
-Boeing is a football bat and is unlikely going to be able to produce AF1 replacements on something resembling a desired timeline
-This is fucking gross
-The required mods will almost certainly come out of USAF money
-The Fat Leonard guys should all be getting pardons any day now, right....?

I thought they already had two -8 airframes in progress to replace the current AF1 rigs. IIRC they're like already 2-3 years into that massive overhaul project with a few more yet to go?

It's incredibly hard. Completely unrealistic that a Qatari (seriously?) airplane would be readily modified to USAF standards for AF-1 in the timeframe they're suggesting. Strong hints of "it's not about the airplane" coming off this one. I also wholeheartedly disagree with the "legal analysis" by the administration.

SNC has never successfully done this before. What could possibly go wrong on the proposed timeline?

I'm somewhat in defense of Boeing on this one, oddly enough. My understanding is they work for a while only to find out the goalposts have moved (no way, right? The USG is a totally reasonable customer). It's my pet peeve working in engineering flight test- the customer often doesn't understand why it's going to cost more time and money when the product is partially built, and they ask for a fundamental difference in design. Then they get mad when they're quoted a number they don't like, and the engineering team ends up on a shoestring budget, under pressure from management to come up with "creative" solutions.

All of that to say, this Qatari deal stinks to high heaven, just like everything this con-man-in-chief does. When viewed through the lens of pure self-enrichment, an otherwise nonsensical presidency suddenly makes a sick sort of sense. Sad times for our country.

I mentioned that too...I'm unaware of the current airframes not being anything but 100% FMC. Maybe I'm off base but it seems weird that this 'plan' would be put into motion for all the reasons mentioned above. I mean, fuck, HMX still flies the VH-3, and it's never failed, right? It's been over a 20 year dumb process to get a replacement, but not an emergency from the aspect of fulfilling the mission. Maybe the Saudis can donate us some cool royal helos, with gold trimming, to help?

It's not about the age of AF-1. This is a vanity/self-enrichment play.

I hope he takes it and uses it. Just put a StarLink antenna on the roof, run a 1MW bluetooth server on the floor connected to all onboard devices, and install an air-to-air TACAN set to here-I-am mode. Maybe trail a Trump 2028 banner.
