I was thinking the same thing but figured I should stay in my element. Glad you said it first.

Let me know if you need any corporate gouge.

Might need it. I'm going to be the NETSAFA DET OIC at Whiting. From what I hear, it's a great stress free ground job. Set your own hours, no meetings, no DH meetings!!!!, no crap. I get assigned to one of the VT squadrons.....I'm guessing VT-6 being thats the squadron of the CDR I'm replacing. Much rather fly the 45 or 6 but not if I have to work at the respective wings. T-34's, here I come.

When I see an E-2 NFO with a "500 trap" patch, what exactly can I assume his participation was in that? I imagine his view is "water, water, water, water, steel, steel, BANG"

Is that about right, or am I missing something? In other words, he had about as much input as his helmet bag did to the success or failure of each trap.

In HSL, I think our backseaters, the AW's could actually get a patch. They are the backup altitude warning, and call out closure rates on approach.

Once over the deck they look behing and down thru the hellhole, and call left-back-right-down, land now, etc to stick the probe in the trap. I have lineup lines, but hitting the trap is far easier with them doing it. Plus they control the helo end of the RAST system except for the emergeny release/manual override.

LSO is able to do so, but on a CG/DD he is so far from the trap that his directions are not as good (read as more mistraps).

will someone please answer my question? I'll be checking into Pensacola June 15th or so, and I will be trying to get PTAD orders. Does anyone know the earliest i will be able to do this, and will i get PTAD for 30days, 60days, or is it up to me and what my OSO wants?

Unfortunately, nobody can answer this question. Phrogpilot73 is right that you can't request PTAD until you check in to MATSG, but beyond that there is no way to plan ahead. Anybody who tells you to expect a certain wait is just telling you how things were when they (or their buddies) were in the pools. Even the people who work in the student control offices at Schools Command and MATSG-21 can't really predict what the wait will be. And, it could be DRASTICALLY different from one week to the next.

Here is my experience: Three weeks from commissioning at OCS, my class was told our wait would be AT LEAST 6 months for pilots, but only a few weeks for NFOs. Some pilots from the beginning of the fiscal year had been sitting for almost 11 months. Unless, of course, I "volunteered" for Vance, then I would be on the fast track. Several of the SNAs from my class classed up immediately after OCS, and I classed up immediately after IFS. A few NFOs also classed up immediately, but those that had to do IFS got stuck waiting for 2 months afterward. Also, I finished primary ahead of a few of the people from Vance, so there is no guarantee that it is faster.

The moral of the story is that things change rapidly. There only seem to be two speeds: either the training pipeline is pumping fast as hell, or it is oozing along. My advice would be to check in to MATSG and take things as they come. If you get stuck in "A" pool, study ahead a little, work on your tan, practice your hobbies, and spend some time with your wife, girlfriend, or local hooker. If you get a chance to go TAD somewhere, take it, but DON'T count on it. Also, be ready to drop everything at a moments notice and start class. Honestly, a moments notice is a little severe, they usually give students at least 2 days notice. Also, students seldom get more that 1 to 1 1/2 weeks notice.

I have had to wait in four pools (A, C, primary, and helo). I have enjoyed them all, but I have never classed up on an originally projected date, and I have never had more than 3 days notice. Now I have a projected winging date; I guess we will see how accurate that is ;)

Flight school is a great time, but it can also be stressful. I would not recommend adding any artificial stressors (like deadlines or rigid plans). Like several people in this thread have already mentioned, the Navy (or Marine Corps) will get their money's worth out of you before your career is over.

PS ... sorry to interupt the nfo bashing. I remember my first day in RI ground school. This 900 year old grumpy man shuffles to the front of the class. "What's the difference between an NFO and a sack of $h1t." ... Silence from the class ... "Well I don't know either." ... silence ... "OK, enough chit-chat, let's start class."

You masterminds are intentionally pushing my button, aren't you? Laugh it up jackass...yeah, we love you guys too. BTW, that translates across the UHF as "Hummer Controlled Approach...Queers and CODs, expect random vectors for recovery." :D

And Bunk, as many times as we've looked out for our Password brethren hauling my much awaited crap from the stateside world...I tell ya' - I'm just so disappointed in the O-4 you've grown up to be. I'd expect a ration of crap from someone the likes of Rammer, but never you... ;)

You know nothing of this air defense / command & control world I speak of, little amphib man...now back to your sad little Green Crown world. Go on now...Git! :D

FWIW, it's actually more like "Don't kill me, don't kill me, don't kill me, don't kill me, BANG, don't drive us over the side, don't drive us over the side, don't drive us over the side." No get out of jail free rocket strapped to my a$$ like my previous life, so I'll just be thankfully wearing my patch and revelling in the fact that I've almost died 500 times through no fault of my own. And all this flak from a guy who can't even spell "crossdeck pennant." Sheesh. :D

Hey, you know I love you guys. The kind of love that I wouldn't want to see you get hit by a Mack truck.........but it's still love :) Rammer hates everyone.
