That isn’t really related to the post I made about how a big percentage of the enlisted military is made up of poor people who get sent off to die on behalf of stupid politicians and flag officers.
Let’s see: an all volunteer force highly focused on diversity offering upward mobility and opportunity to people of all walks of life or… an evil organization preying on poor people, sending them off to die. Interesting choice, but consistent with continual victimhood.

Yea offering upward mobility and opportunity for poor people to go fight proxy wars on behalf of politicians and people who won’t go themselves.

Hear it often by people “we gotta go over their and kick their butt. We didn’t lose Vietnam or Afghanistan or Iraq. It’s the politicians faults”

meanwhile we lost the Vietnam war, then Iraq, and then Afghanistan. Cycle keeps going.

Do we need a military? Of course.

Do a lot of people die needlessly cause of flag officers and politicians? Yes and way more then acceptable.

And that goes for all races and backgrounds

I mean, those two trains of thought are not really mutually exclusive. You can be thankful for the opportunities the DOD offers but still not agree with the actions of the politicians who send them off to war.

And also my point is while It does offer a large amount of opportunity- shouldn’t we look to fix some of the problems communities face if some of their only opportunities is the military?

The premise that the military is the only viable path for lower socioeconomic citizens is false. It keeps being assumed. It is not a given.

If I implied it’s the only one. I apologize. You’re right. It isn’t.

There are workforce programs and apprenticeships as well but none are on the level of the military benefits. And for a lot of people housing is a problem and the military solves it.

Like no shit! Rich, poor, middle class, male, female, whatever. An enemy's bullet doesn't discriminant. You can be critical of the cost in blood our nation's policies. But bringing race into it is a non starter. The military does not "prey" on the poor (regardless of race) any more than Walmart, Dollar General, Jack in the Box, the buy here pay here car lot, or any other minimum wage job or super discount retail operation found in more economically distressed areas. It is a voluntary military. You are not educated or sharp enough to get a career track big time job with a tech firm, or can't stand working in the Amazon fulfillment center, or smiling all day at the Walmart check out, what are you going to do? Enlisting is just one option, and the benefits, to include educational, are a lot better than you will get at the majority of minimum wage jobs. Gotta start somewhere. Again, when one considers all the various incentives, disincentives, individual motivations, personal goals, and human nature writ large, you find race fades to a minor factor.

@nodropinufaka It occurs to me that "preying" is a verb requiring action on the part of the military. And as near as I can tell this only occurs in the form of targeted recruiting or other affirmative action type initiatives intended to develop a more diverse military, am I right? And isn't that something you are very much in favor of? It seems as though the military is damned it they do and damned if they don't.

Well I guess what I was getting at is maybe we should consider better options for people then the military and find what those could be.

I am extremely against free college. Don’t find that reasonable.

But I think emphasizing education, reducing crime, and looking at the destabilizing factors that tend to drive poverty and crime as a starting point so people see opportunities rather then just the military or crime.

Programs that help people attend community college, help them develop majors and paths to work, etc.

Programs that address healthcare access and the disparate results from inadequate health care access. Did you know Black Mother’s face higher rates of maternal mortality and infant mortality? Then adequate care for children following birth.

It’s an extremely complex issue and I think it’s worth addressing rather then individuals seeing the military as their only way out of their situation which is reality for many.

Addressed in my post above but preying is towards people of lower income and with less opportunities. That covers all races as I previously said.

Don’t you find it a problem that the only chance a lot of people in lower socioeconomic background have to be successful is to enlist in the military?

The Black Sabbath song War Pigs talked about this 51 years ago-

“Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah”

Military loves to prey on poor people from all races to enlist.
I didn’t enlist until after I graduated college. Never would have if not for 9/11. Stop that guilt trip shit, the fucking draft is dead. I’ve served with officers, and enlisted, from a widely varied background, educationally and economically.

That is also not “their only chance” they could also stay in school, succeed, and get a trade/degree/life education via any number of community colleges, universities, trade schools, or just getting a fucking J-O-B and pay their bills until they decide what they want to do when they “grow up”.

Any belief there is only “one way” out of poverty or shitty upbringing is a myth brought to you by the people that profit from being the mythical “only way.”

You aren’t worth the time, bud…enjoy your victimhood, I’d like to say it’ll be lonely, but, sadly, this generation is pretty good at it…
Lol. I know you’d like to think I sit in my apartment sulking but I don’t.

I think it’s worth addressing impacts people face such as healthcare, education, and crime. Many of those disproportionately affect minorities. And many feel their only option is the military.
